CB Hot Suit Takes: Dan Adams, General Manager, The Idea Shed

CB Hot Suit Takes is our new Q&A series for extremely busy CEOs and senior leaders across the industry ~ covering careers, creativity, challenges and the song that sums it all up. Next in the hot seat is Dan Adams, General Manager, The Idea Shed.

1. What made you get into advertising?

Truth is, I fell into it, and then I guess I just kept tripping forward. I started as a Brand Ambassador at music festivals in the UK, then 3D TV activations at the O2, London and eventually dressed as one of hundreds of Santas in a shopping centre flash mob!

From there, Senior Account Executive was my first ‘proper job’ and then every rung on the agency ladder to General Manager. The journey is something I’m really proud of, and one I like to think keeps my leadership pragmatic and connected to the realities of the work.

2. Which piece of work are you most proud of, and why?

Definitely ‘Sky Ride’ which was a partnership between Sky and British Cycling, with the aim of getting a million more people on their bikes and cycling regularly. I had the privilege of being part of the team, in an Olympic year, that developed, designed, and delivered a national series of fun, traffic-free city centre cycling events across the UK. It was large-scale, genuinely purposeful, and had a massive impact on towns and cities all over the UK. I learnt so much, and yet it didn’t feel like work one bit.

3. What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role right now?

It feels like we have to work harder for every single dollar, while delivering braver, smarter, more effective, and more competitive ideas while doing it. Oh, and faster, much faster.

4. What’s the most recent thing you’ve learned – professionally or personally?

Not to take anything for granted. Life can change very quickly, and perspective is something you only truly appreciate once it’s tested.

5. What song best sums up your career so far?

Tubthumping by Chumbawamba first came to mind, but I’d say something like Times Like These by The Foo Fighters is also appropriate.
