CB Hot Suit Takes is our new Q&A series for extremely busy CEOs and senior leaders across the industry ~ covering careers, creativity, challenges and the song that sums it all up. Next in the hot seat is Sophie Lander, Managing Director, The General Store.
1. What made you get into advertising?
My dad had an incredible career in media and I watched him as I was growing up with great intrigue. I loved the thought that advertising was equal parts problem solving and creativity and I was very drawn to that. It also was a line ball call between going in to a legal profession or advertising, but the creativity potential made me ultimately make the right decision.
2. Which piece of work are you most proud of, and why?
Recently, it would be rebel “the town without sport” as I loved telling the story of how important sport is by showing if it never existed.
In my past, it would be the work for Dove and Loblaws in Canada. Not to skirt around the question and pick a favourite child…But most importantly, it would be the people I make the work with each day. I’m fortunate to work with brilliant people and some I have been fortunate to work with in multiple agencies. Without great people; none of this is possible.
3. What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role right now?
Balancing scale and meaningful connection. As we continue to grow our people, our clients and our business, I never want to lose the care and connection that we need to do great work. The power of great minds coming together is something that I truly love and I want to make sure we are always making space for this in the craziness of the speed and ever changing world we all operate in.
4. What’s the most recent thing you’ve learned – professionally or personally?
Ensure you have no regrets. If there is something you want to do, work out a plan to make it happen. Don’t leave anything on the table and trust your instinct.
5. What song best sums up your career so far?
Shake it off by Taylor Swift- because the highs in this industry always outweigh the lows. It’s an important reminder I say to myself often.
