1. What made you get into advertising?
I entered a Year 10 NSW statewide competition to develop an ad campaign and tagline for a major attraction in NSW. Surprisingly, I won. Even more surprisingly, the tagline is still being used, 28 years on.
2. Which piece of work are you most proud of, and why?
It was Christmas 2010 and the most horrific floods in Queensland’s history ravaged 90 towns with 200,000 people affected. The town of Bundaberg went completely under. This idea started with a simple txt to the Matt Bruhn CMO at Diageo on Boxing Day. “Bundy must help in some way”. The reply “Yes”. And the Bundaberg Rum Watermark idea was born.
We created a powerful humankind idea to help the town and people of Bundaberg. I’m most proud because although it was the Christmas holiday period, both the agency and client came back to work during their hols without hesitation and made it happen. I saw the best in humanity bring it to life in less than four weeks. And it’s not always about awards, but the cherry on top was winning Australia’s first ever Cannes Lions Effectiveness Lion for this work.
3. What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role right now?
The convenient way rarely works
4. What’s the most recent thing you’ve learned – professionally or personally?
What you put in, is what you get out.
