CB Hot Suit Takes: Remy Brassac, Co-Founder and Managing Partner, Rumble Strategic Creative
CB Hot Suit Takes is our new Q&A series for extremely busy CEOs and senior leaders across the industry ~ covering careers, creativity, challenges and the song that sums it all up. Next in the hot seat is Remy Brassac, Co-Founder and Managing Partner, Rumble Strategic Creative.
1. What made you get into advertising?
I was a professional DJ in the underground house club and rave scene from 1991 to 2001. As a DJ, I’d developed a knack for controlling large numbers of people (thousands) in unison – reading and feeling the mood, responding to it live, through my music over an eight hour journey. It’s an incredible feeling. I also got into event management and marketing those events. A friend of mine who was in advertising and respected my craft, suggested that I look into advertising – an industry she thought would like me, and one that I would find fascinating. Indeed, the idea of influencing not just thousands, but millions of people (consumers) through the power of well coordinated creativity, got me hook, line and sinker. The opportunity to work alongside creative geniuses was the cherry on top.
2. Which piece of work are you most proud of, and why?
So very proud of our UXR. A proactive response to what was a simple Xmas card brief from the Cancer Council in December 2015, has now become an enduring and much loved product that we fully own and operate (in our very small amount of spare time). We’ve donated over $500,000 to charities from sales, it helps protect people from skin cancer, people just love its Aussie humour and design, and my kids get a kick out of seeing people wearing them on the beach. It’s cool.
3. What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role right now?
Short-termism. It’s a killer.
4. What’s the most recent thing you’ve learned – professionally or personally?
Go with the grain, not against it. It’s taken me 50 years to learn this and finally come to terms with it. But I’ll still give it a go (I’ll always be an anarchist at heart 😉).
5. What song best sums up your career so far?
The Age of Love, by The Age of Love (Jam & Spoon Mix 1992)
It’s a wild, epic, euphoric ride that grabs you by the guts and throws you around. By the end, it leaves you feeling elated. I find it to be a good musical metaphor of our industry, and how my career has felt to date.
