1. What made you get into advertising?
I was enticed out of a trainee media sales role in 1992 by a client at Leo Burnett. Sounded like a cool job, so thought I’d give it a crack! It was a brilliant 9-year kick start to a career in advertising.
2. Which piece of work are you most proud of, and why?
I’m most proud of the suite of Kmart “Irresistibly low prices on everything every day, Ok!” work I was fortunate to be a part of in the early 2010s. It’s stayed with me because the work truly disrupted the discount department store category and resulted in an outstanding case study – its success driven by a true partnership between a highly engaged client, their creative agency and long-term research partners.
3. What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role right now?
Helping clients stay committed to long-term brand building in a world that demands immediacy. Speed and volume are the pressure, but consistency over time is what actually builds brand value, even as channels and formats evolve.
4. What’s the most recent thing you’ve learned – professionally or personally?
Something I’ve reflected on lately is the importance of nurturing long-term networks and relationships in our industry.
5. What song best sums up your career so far?
“Vienna” – Billy Joel
Taking inspiration from recent TikTok trends, Vienna by Billy Joel has a nice “you’re further along than you think, and you’re allowed to slow down” vibe. I’m really good at reminding people this business is a marathon, not a sprint, but not so good at taking my own advice!
