The New Wave ~ Paper Moose
The New Wave is Campaign Brief’s Q&A series spotlighting the next generation of independent creative companies and exploring how the indie model is evolving. From structure and speed to culture and capability, we unpack where these businesses are finding their edge and what’s driving client decisions today. Next up is Paper Moose.
Give us the elevator pitch – who are you and what do you do?
We are Paper Moose, a fiercely independent, B Corp-certified, full-service creative agency based in Sydney. We pride ourselves on the fact that we’ve all come from different backgrounds and disciplines, not just advertising. Because as creators, we enjoy solving problems that often extend beyond traditional advertising.
Since 2011, we’ve made wildly effective work: wildly creative ideas grounded in behavioural science, data and more recently AI, ensuring they’re ruthlessly effective.
We keep strategy, creative, production and media under one hoof, shortening the distance between strategic ideas and results while finding better, more integrated solutions.
Are indies still challengers, or have they become the norm?
What makes indies unique is their ability to shift quickly in an ever-evolving media landscape.
Paper Moose was founded by a group of artists and storytellers, not advertisers, so we’ve always built and designed from first principles and challenged the industry to rethink how it should operate. Founded 15 years ago with a healthy dose of naivety, this allowed us to build something truly different.
Independence has become the benchmark for how creative companies should operate: flatter, faster and free from the network friction that kills momentum.
What’s your unfair advantage over the networks today?
Our clients don’t work with account managers who brief junior teams. They work directly with senior makers and tastemakers who conceive, shoot and validate the work. The people who you meet on the pitch are the people you work with.
We pride ourselves on being a B Corp-certified ethical operator, but we don’t confuse purpose with softness. We run a bleeding-edge tech stack, including our proprietary AI platform, Moose Review, which validates concepts with synthetic audiences in seconds, not weeks.
We are a full-service, fully integrated agency and production company under one roof, so strategy, creative and craft never split into separate silos or lose momentum through handoffs.
That combination means we can move faster, leaner and more effectively than a network. Senior talent, direct access and proof before production, with media and creative working together. That is how we make wild ideas wildly effective.
How are you using AI to compete above your weight?
AI is layered throughout what we do now in so many ways. It doesn’t come up with any wild ideas; it validates it, checks it or helps us visualise ideas in ways that go beyond a simple sketch.
We use AI across our production workflows to personalise assets at scale, so wildly effective creative is never suffocated by cost. We utilise Ai in ways that allow us to create our own inhouse software that enables us to shape how we work by engineering bespoke tools and products. We have replaced $100k/y of SaaS subscriptions with our own bespoke operating system. We even have 5 specialist agentic staff members that super-charge our human tastemakers.
A great example of this is Moose Review, which uses synthetic audiences to pressure-test creative concepts and predict performance before anything is shot. That means we can be wilder in our thinking because we have evidence that the idea will land.
What kind of clients are choosing indies right now – and why?
Clients who are tired of safe solutions and want wildly effective alternatives. Values-led brands, ambitious challengers and marketers who need to prove commercial impact fast.
They come to indies because they want direct access to the people actually making the work, transparent accountability and creative that moves the needle.
They understand that scale doesn’t equate to effectiveness or value.
What’s next – growth, staying lean, or something else?
Staying lean while scaling wildly effective creative. There’s something nice about going for a pub lunch together and staying tight as a team. We’re careful not to fall into the trap of growing too rapidly and losing our sense of who we are.
Staying independent and B Corp-certified is non-negotiable: we want to back good organisations with work that is as effective as it is unexpected.
We’re also expanding Moose Review as a standalone product and pushing deeper into generative solutions and automation, while building more products in the future, so more brands can access the combination of wild ideas and hard evidence.
