The New Wave ~ Scooter

The New Wave is Campaign Brief’s Q&A series spotlighting the next generation of independent creative companies and exploring how the indie model is evolving. From structure and speed to culture and capability, we unpack where these businesses are finding their edge and what’s driving client decisions today. Next up is Scooter.

Give us the elevator pitch – who are you and what do you do?

We’re Scooter, a specialist retail agency that influences buyer behaviour to drive conversion. With brand and campaign creative, fractional customer marketing and retail POS production under one roof, we shape brands people want to shop. We care more about the last 3 feet than any other agency in the village, and we believe every village needs a retail specialist like Scooter.

Are indies still challengers, or have they become the norm?

When we started Scooter 12 years ago, we were one of the first to challenge the traditional agency model. We were and still are nimble, agile and efficient, just like a scooter. But with the market catching up and indies becoming the norm, being independent isn’t enough to stand out anymore. What sets us apart now is our specialism in influencing buyer behaviour by reaching people with the right message at the right time all the way to point of purchase.

What’s your unfair advantage over the networks today?

Most agencies are chasing the big-budget brand awareness work, and while that’s still important, we pick up where they lose interest – the point where consumers are deciding to buy one product or service over another. Our role is to influence that decision in the lead-up to the physical or digital shelf. Having fractional customer marketing, brand and campaign creative and retail POS production as end-to-end services puts us in a unique position to do exactly that. Our unfair advantage is that we care more about the last 3 feet than any other agency in the village.

How are you using AI to compete above your weight?

AI is woven into how we work every day – from the systems that keep the business running efficiently to the creative tools our teams use to visualise concepts. But what really helps us punch above our weight is our specialist retail knowledge: knowing how to influence buyer behaviour when it counts the most.

What kind of clients are choosing indies right now – and why?

We can’t speak for every indie, but we know why clients choose Scooter. They want bigger impact, better value for money and deeply specialised capability in shaping the choices buyers make. Shopper and retail marketing isn’t the work most agencies are interested in, but it’s sharply aligned with sales growth and that’s what clients want.

What’s next – growth, staying lean, or something else?

Growth for us isn’t about a number, for us it’s about continuously evolving our service offering to what clients and the market need. With media channels becoming more fragmented, budgets getting tighter and more choice available than ever, brands need to be working harder in the consideration and conversion stages which is where we come in. We want every CMO to know that the skills required from their agency partners is changing and every agency village needs a specialist retail agency like Scooter.
