The New Wave ~ Bastion Australia
The New Wave is Campaign Brief’s Q&A series spotlighting the next generation of independent creative companies and exploring how the indie model is evolving. From structure and speed to culture and capability, we unpack where these businesses are finding their edge and what’s driving client decisions today. Next up is Bastion Australia.
1. Give us the elevator pitch – who are you and what do you do?
Bastion Australia. An integrated marketing and communications agency across Melbourne, Sydney and Queensland and part of the largest independent agency network in Australasia, with locations in New Zealand and the US.
We exist to put brands, organisations and people in a position of strength. We do that by bringing creative, communications, media, digital, experience, insights and production under one roof, all built for the modern marketer and ready to solve the world’s hardest marketing problems.
Today’s marketers are navigating more complexity than ever. They’re expected to move faster, drive commercial impact and connect with audiences across an increasingly fragmented landscape. Our job is to simplify that complexity, bringing the right disciplines together so clients can grow with confidence.
2. Are indies still challengers, or have they become the norm?
The definition of challenger has changed. Being independent isn’t the differentiator anymore, it’s what you do with that independence.
The best independents still think like challengers: curious, agile, willing to question convention in pursuit of a better outcome. That’s how we think.
For modern marketers, speed, integration and adaptability have become genuine competitive advantages. Independence lets us build tailored solutions around our clients’ challenges not sell them a case study reel or force them into legacy structures.
That’s what actually moves the needle.
3. What’s your unfair advantage over the networks?
We’re built for the modern marketer, not the traditional agency model.
The networks have similar capabilities. The difference is theirs are spread across separate agencies with separate commercial agendas and the client still has to connect the dots. We’ve built one integrated business where strategy, creative, media, communications, digital, experience, insights and production work as one team, focused on one outcome. That integration doesn’t just make us faster, it makes the work better.
Independence compounds the advantage. Decisions happen locally and quickly. Senior leaders stay close to clients. We can adapt without layers of bureaucracy, while still being large enough to partner with some of the world’s biggest brands. Integration, agility and accountability on the same team. That’s hard to replicate.
4. How are you using AI to compete above your weight?
We don’t see AI as replacing people. We see it as making them “Super Human”.
We talk about building Super Human capability, pairing the best of technology with great talent, human creativity, judgement and strategic thinking.
The real opportunity isn’t speed. It’s reclaiming time. AI removes the administration, repetitive tasks and manual processes that have historically consumed our teams, creating more capacity for what clients actually value: solving complex problems, uncovering sharper insights, generating stronger ideas and making better decisions.
We spend less time producing and more time thinking. The competitive advantage isn’t AI on its own, it’s what happens when exceptional people are empowered by exceptional technology.
5. What kind of clients are choosing indies right now and why?
Modern marketers who are operating in constant change.
They need agencies that are commercially minded, genuinely collaborative and able to move at the pace of their business, not constrained by global processes or legacy structures.
They want senior expertise, integrated thinking and end-to-end solutions that help them navigate complexity with confidence. Increasingly, they’re finding that with independents.
6. What’s next – growth, staying lean, or something else?
Purposeful growth.
We’re focused on building the agency modern marketers need, not the one the industry has always known.
That means investing in capability, technology and people, expanding into markets where we can create genuine value, and continuing to innovate ahead of disruption, not in response to it.
We’ll always think like a challenger. Not because we have to, but because that’s where the best ideas come from. The opportunity isn’t to be the biggest independent, it’s to redefine what an independent can be.
