The New Wave ~ The Fuel Agency

The New Wave is Campaign Brief’s Q&A series spotlighting the next generation of independent creative companies and exploring how the indie model is evolving. From structure and speed to culture and capability, we unpack where these businesses are finding their edge and what’s driving client decisions today. Next up is The Fuel Agency.

1. Give us the elevator pitch – who are you and what do you do?

Fuel exists to positively change the trajectory of people and brands.

We help leaders get clear on where they want to go, what needs to change and why anyone should care.

Because great brands rarely come from more.
There’s plenty of more out there. We’re about better.

Better clarity. Better thinking. Better ideas.

Whether it’s a business problem, a brand challenge, or a campaign brief, we find the opportunity, sharpen the thinking, and create ideas that move businesses forward, and then we fuel it further.

2. Are indies still challengers, or have they become the norm?

We don’t think anything is “the norm” anymore, and nor should it be.

Indies may be commonplace. Independent thinking isn’t.

Every agency should be challenging something – the category, the brief, the client’s assumptions and, most importantly, itself.

Being independent doesn’t make you a challenger, any more than scale makes you good.

Clients don’t buy the org chart. They buy confidence. What matters is the horsepower you can put into understanding the problem, the quality of the thinking, and whether you can reduce all that complexity into an idea that people remember.

After 26 years, we’re not focused on what the other agencies are doing. We’re running our own race.

And that’s our challenge.

3. What’s your unfair advantage over the networks today?

Experience without the fear.

We’ve seen a lot and we’re still in the room.

After 26 years, we’ve worked with global businesses, national organisations and emerging brands across almost every category. That experience helps us recognise patterns quickly, ask better questions and get to the issue behind the issue.

We still spend a lot of time with CEOs, Boards and leadership teams working through where the business is going, what really matters and what needs to change.

And we’re still there when we turn that into the strategy, brand, idea or campaign.

That continuity matters. The people who understand the problem are the people shaping the answer.

Ownership also gives us the freedom to think long term and make bold decisions for the agency.

That’s a powerful position to work from, because it liberates us to think beyond the next quarter, the short-term agendas, and the constant drive for “more”, and work in service of the best answer for the client.

4. How are you using AI to compete above your weight?

AI has given every agency and our clients access to extraordinary capability. That doesn’t mean they can do what we do.

We use AI extensively to research faster, interrogate assumptions, explore possibilities, improve processes and pressure-test our thinking.

It’s another incredibly well-informed opinion in the room… it just doesn’t get the casting vote.

Our advantage is knowing what to ask, what to challenge, what to ignore and recognising which ideas are worth pursuing.

Our clients are still people trying to influence other people.

AI can give us horsepower, but judgement decides where we point it.

That’s where the value is.

5. What kind of clients are choosing indies right now – and why?

We don’t think clients choose agencies because they’re independent.

Clients choose people they connect with, and the clients that connect most with Fuel are ambitious.

They’re trying to move something forward – a business, a category, a brand or an organisation, and they want people who will match that energy and focus.

They’re buying the quality of the thinking, the ideas, a different perspective, the chemistry, and our ability to move them forward and make a bigger impact.

Whether that’s common in an indie agency is debatable, but it’s certainly true in our case.

6. What’s next – growth, staying lean, or something else?

We don’t believe you have to choose between growth and staying lean.

What interests us now is building a better business, not a bigger one.

At a certain size, an agency can start spending enormous amounts of energy servicing the machinery of the agency itself. More layers, more management, more pressures, and more things competing with the reason you built the business in the first place.

Great thinking. Great ideas. Great relationships with great people.

We’ve deliberately changed the model, so growth isn’t just about headcount, but personal impact.

We measure growth by the trajectory of our people and our clients.

We want people to join Fuel and build a career here. To challenge themselves, become better than they thought they could be, and help the people around them do the same.

We want clients to know their brand is materially stronger because we were a part of it.

If our impact keeps growing, the business will follow.
