The New Wave ~ District

The New Wave is Campaign Brief’s Q&A series spotlighting the next generation of independent creative companies and exploring how the indie model is evolving. From structure and speed to culture and capability, we unpack where these businesses are finding their edge and what’s driving client decisions today. Next up is District.

Give us the elevator pitch – who are you and what do you do?

District is a creative production agency specialising in campaign films and design. Our strength comes from our people. Based in Western Sydney, the agency reflects what we see as the new Sydney: a mix of cultures, backgrounds and perspectives.

We’re a young, energetic team, but there’s a real breadth of experience around the table, with our team ranging from their early 20s to their 40s. That mix means ideas are challenged from different angles, different audiences are represented in the room, and there’s rarely a perspective we haven’t considered.

Are indies still challengers, or have they become the norm?

We think indies are still challengers, but the gap is closing. There’s still trust and familiarity attached to legacy names, but we’re seeing independents take up more space and compete on the strength of the work. The landscape is shifting, and what we’ve seen recently with M+C Saatchi locally is another sign that the traditional agency model is changing.

What’s your unfair advantage over the networks today?

We’d say versatility and diversity. We build around the needs of each idea, allocating the people best suited to the work, regardless of title or seniority. It gives us the freedom to approach each project differently.

That’s strengthened by the mix of cultures and backgrounds within the agency. Only two of us were born in Australia, so there’s a broad range of perspectives in the room. It shapes how we think, what we notice and ultimately the work we make.

How are you using AI to compete above your weight?

We use AI as a tool to make the creative process more effective. We maintain rigorous standards around where it fits, primarily across research, preparation and organisation, so we can spend more of our time on the creative itself.

For us, the creative thinking still belongs in the room. Creativity should be looking for what comes next, and our job is to give our team the space to question ideas and push them further. They’re our greatest strength.

What kind of clients are choosing indies right now – and why?

We’re seeing a real mix. Emerging brands are drawn to indies for the flexibility, access and ability to make budgets work harder, while established brands are often looking for a fresh perspective outside their usual structures. Creatively, indies can move faster, with the freedom to take more risks and challenge conventions in how they approach the work, which is increasingly valuable to both.

What’s next – growth, staying lean, or something else?

Growth, but not at all costs. For us, growth doesn’t necessarily mean a bigger team. The goal is to build long-term relationships with a core group of clients, while continuing to work on projects that give us the freedom to explore creatively.

We also see narrative work as a natural next step for us in the near future. It underpins the background of many of our senior creatives and has a big influence on how we think about ideas, and the work we make commercially.
