World first for Uni of NSW as 30,000 students receive dynamic personalised acceptance videos – tech made possible by Smart Video Australia
Wednesday was an exciting day for students around Australia who had been hopeful of gaining acceptance to University.
While most students received an email letting them know if they were successful, UNSW sent emails containing a personalised video, made just for them.
30,000 lucky students not only received guaranteed entry to UNSW they received their very own video, announcing their success and the course / preference they have been accepted for.
The technology was made possible by Smart Video Australia, which has offices in Sydney and London. SVA wrote and produced the video and recorded greetings to over 6000 unique student names including Western, European, Indian, Arabic and Asian names.
Says former ad agency creative director Rodd Martin (left), now CEO of SVA: “Each video was dynamic, streamed in real time and triggered by a Smart Video API that was implemented through UNSW’s existing EDM program.
“Smart Video Australia’s cloud based platform is a convergence of video, data and personalisation. It allows videos to be delivered to an infinite sized database, in real time.
“There is no limit to the elements that can be customised including text, audio and image.”
Smart Video Australia’s other clients include Specsavers, MasterCard UK, Westfield and two top 10 financial services companies.

That’s a long way from The Bot, Roddy…well done.

First for UNSW, not for the world though.
@Looks Familiar – the world first you’re missing here is the “dynamic” video technology behind this project.
“Dynamic” video =
Our videos aren’t pre-rendered and hosted on a server. The master video and all variable / customisable elements are logged into our cloud based platform and streamed live, on demand.
When a customer (or student in this case) hits the play button in their EMD, a landing page opens and plays their video. The master video and relevant variables are stitched together in 1-3 seconds and the video plays.
This means whenever the customer / student data is updated in the API, the video is automatically updated. The API drives the creation of the personalised video, instantly. This is new. It’s real time, updatable video technology.
In the UNSW project, student results were changing up to final launch, making pre-rendered videos un-workable.
Our platform allows us to customise anything – text, image, video scenes and importantly audio. For the UNSW project we recorded greetings to over 6,000 names – Western, European, Arabic, Indian and Asian. We also recorded over 128 course names. Those audio files are logged in the platform library now, available for future personalised videos.
All this provides a seamless UX that is light years ahead of technology available for student communication up ‘til now.
This project is a world first for UNSW. As is the MasterCard UK personalised video statement project we launched to customers last Thursday. That one a world first in the credit card space.
Thanks for the opportunity to explain our technology in more detail.
A Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year to all.
