VANDAL creates LIGHT ARC for The Galeries as a placemaking activation

Commissioned by Vicinity Centres for The Galeries in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, LIGHT ARC by VANDAL is a digital placemaking art installation conceived as an interactive, 3-dimensional canvas for artistic expression and retail activation.

Designed by VANDAL creative director Richard Swan, the impressive LIGHT ARC sculpture becomes the focal point for The Galeries’ placemaking activation.

LIGHT ARC’s debut collaboration saw Australian artist Elliott Routledge, aka FUNSKULL (@funskull), creating the artwork ‘skin’ for the LIGHT ARC. The upcoming installation titled ‘Stranger Spring’ will feature the work of London-based Alexa Sirbu and Lukas Vojir.

Says Swan: “I specifically designed the sculpture in an asymmetric fashion to compliment the environment it will be exhibited in, also incorporating programmable lighting surfaces. As an interactive placemaking sculpture, LIGHT ARC incentivises audience engagement with people immersing themselves underneath the ever-changing, animating coloured lights.”

The Galeries further commissioned VANDAL to create a “freeze-frame” of FUNSKULL’s artwork in CONFETTI LANE. CONFETTI LANE activates The Galeries laneway in a confetti explosion of FUNSKULL’s artwork as if frozen in time.

Made up of 250 individual pieces, the artwork is a feat to see accomplished. Through the use of abstracted shapes and hand-cut patterns, the artworks aim to appear like a freeze-frame of confetti thrown into the air, stopped mid-motion, and zoomed in to reveal their scale.

LIGHT ARC returns next Tuesday 17th September for ‘Stranger Spring’ as an obscure and immersive sensory experience of all things Spring. ‘Stranger Spring’ will see LIGHT ARC complemented with soundscapes, smells, and tastes live until the 15th of October.
