Sweetshop signs director Max Barden for representation in Australia

Global production company Sweetshop has signed comedy director Max Barden for representation in Australia.

Harnessing his absurd and unconventional style, Barden will try anything and everything in the pursuit of a gag, especially at his own expense. He’s been making and performing in his own content for over a decade, kick-started by winning Tropfest Junior with a film about making a film and thus teaching him that he doesn’t need to be creative to be successful. Prior to Covid entering our lives, he gained experience in Europe where he worked at Czar Amsterdam and was mentored in comedic direction by the legendary Bart Timmer. Barden recently directed a series of films for The Monkeys’ Mountain Goat Beer campaign.

Says Edward Pontifex, managing director of Sweetshop Australia: “When we came across Max and his work, he was a total breath of fresh air. Not only was he prepared to put himself out there to get people’s attention, but he managed to pull it off in a funny and self-deprecating way.”

Says Barden: “When Edward first emailed me, I thought he was trying to buy a pair of shoes I had listed on Gumtree. I was initially disappointed when I found out that wasn’t the case, but now I am happy because he signed me with Sweetshop. If you do know anyone looking for size 10 New Balance, please email me.”

Says Wilf Sweetland, global CEO at Sweetshop: “Max’s work is utterly unique. His sense of comedic craft is innate within him and comes out in everything he does. He is like no one else and I know Brands and Agencies are going to love making ads with him.”
