Supernormal signs VERSUS for New Zealand representation
Following a strong run of international accolades at Cannes Lions, The One Show New York, D&AD and Spikes Asia, independent production company Supernormal has signed VERSUS for exclusive representation in Aotearoa. The move brings one of Australia’s most accomplished and internationally active filmmaking partnerships – comprising Tanya Babić and Jason Sukadana – to the New Zealand market for the first time.
VERSUS have spent several years building a body of work that moves freely between advertising and culture. Their recent CommBank Matildas campaign for Football Australia and the #Ausify campaign for Music Australia have been named as finalists at AWARD. Alongside a list of commercial clients that include Nike, Audi, and Persol, institutional commissions for the Sydney Opera House, Powerhouse Museum and Phoenix Central Park — a contemporary arts centre in Sydney — sets the duo apart from their peers.
Says Matt McKenzie, Executive Producer, Supernormal: “For the past year we’ve been focused on building a roster around directors with a strong point of view, a distinctive visual language and real cultural awareness. We believe the most exciting briefs coming out of agencies right now are looking for exactly that, and Tanya and Jason deliver it. Their films take the brief seriously as a starting point and then do something genuinely unexpected with it. There’s an art world sensibility there, without the art world distance. The work is always in service of the idea, and that’s everything.”
Says VERSUS (Tanya Babić and Jason Sukadana): “As a duo, collaboration sits at the core of how we work. The projects we’re most proud of have come from genuine collaboration with agencies. The kind where everyone is deeply committed to pushing the idea, expanding the client’s thinking, and properly interrogating what it stands for, rather than simply delivering it or defaulting to expectation. We believe that kind of trusted collaboration is one of the most underrated creative tools at our disposal.
“We’re drawn to creatives who are willing to challenge conventions, pushing beyond the obvious both visually and thematically while protecting the intent throughout. That’s when the work begins to evolve into something more unexpected and genuinely compelling.
“Across the wider landscape, it’s clear that this is the kind of work that endures. Work with a distinct point of view that doesn’t feel like it could have been made any other way.
“We tend to recognise that potential early, and from there it becomes about understanding what the idea needs to fully realise.
“That’s the space we’re excited to step into with Aotearoa, and to contribute something meaningful to its legacy of bold, standout creative.”
VERSUS are available immediately for commercial projects in Aotearoa. See more of their work here.
