Photoplay signs photographer-director Karima Asaad

Photoplay Photography has announced a new addition to the roster, photographer/director Karima Asaad.

Asaad is an award-winning artist of Egyptian-Lebanese heritage brought up in remote NSW.

An agent provocateur, Asaad is a force of nature with a folio spanning fashion photography, cinematic performance, and reportage.

Asaad’s strength originates from a connection to her subject, generating distinctive imagery that is electrifying and pulsates with life.

Her staged voyeuristic style explores people in their power and provocatively captures a subversive feminine gaze. Subjects are captured in narrative moments – empowered, playfully erotic, ultra-glamorous, alive.

Over the course of her unconventional career, Asaad has worked as a photojournalist and a freelance photographer in London and New York. Editorial clients include The New York Times, The Australian Geographic, The Guardian, and The Times. In 2019 Asaad won the MEAA NT Media Awards for Visual Storytelling. Asaad is an accomplished director, applying the same fresh, visual eye to a variety of film projects.

Asaad’s captivating style has resulted in collaboration with brands: Westpac, Westfield, Australian Ethical Super, PUMA x Modibodi, Virgin Australia, Samsung, and the Australian Government.
