Motion Sickness wins Gold Lion in Cannes Sustainable Development Goals Lions for Whānau Ora’s “The Māori Roll Call”

Motion Sickness has won a Gold Lion in the Cannes Sustainable Development Goals Lions for Whānau Ora’s “The Māori Roll Call”, one of only two Gold Lions awarded in the category this year.

The campaign was directed by Reagen Butler through production company Supernormal, created in collaboration with Liquid Studios and Loupe.

Fronted by Māori artist and activist Tāme Iti, the campaign featured the names of over 500 real voters and included New Zealand’s longest-ever ad — a 30-minute roll call delivered by Iti — aimed at boosting enrolments on the Māori electoral roll ahead of a pivotal moment in Aotearoa’s political history.

The win comes the day after Motion Sickness’ Kātene Durie-Doherty, Head of Māori Culture, was named global ‘Champion of Good 2026’ at Cannes — recognising his work bringing Māori perspectives and leadership into the creative industry, with the Māori Roll Call cited among the campaigns underpinning that honour.

The Grand Prix in Sustainable Development Goals was awarded to The Partnership Agency, Nairobi, for Too Good Milk’s “Paid Sick Leave for Cows”.
