Leading Melbourne agencies choosing global shows results in suspension of MADC Awards
For the first time in its long history the MADC has been forced to cancel its awards programme for 2013.
MADC president Nigel Dawson said some leading agencies had withdrawn from the awards after being forced to choose between supporting local awards and entering global shows.
Says Dawson: “The MADC awards don’t carry the global weight of other shows and without the support of all Melbourne agencies, the 2013 MADC Awards are not financially or credibly viable. We will suspend the MADC Awards this year and re-emerge with a new format for 2014.”
However, Dawson stressed only the 2013 Awards are affected by this decision. The country’s oldest advertising club will still continue to exist.
Says Dawson: “Our truly important educational schemes, Ignition and Creative Raw, will power on and continue to bring the next generation of advertising and design creatives up through the ranks.”

i guess the result was gonna be a dumb ways to die record breaking white wash. in every single category.
and some of the ‘big’ awarding winning agencies haven’t had a great creative year, so it seems like a nice way for them to limit some damage to their rep.
clever.
Can they at least still put on an exorbitantly priced sit down dinner, MC’d by a disinterested host? No one gives a toss about the statues anyway.
A sign of things to come
It won’t be the last show to die.
I’ll start the list – feel free to add…
1. Caxtons
2. LIA
3. NYF
….
4. Logies
5. AFI’s
…
To be fair, they should at least hand out a best in show for Dumb Ways to Die.
Bit sad. I hope they still have some kind of function so I can have my yearly drinks with my ad buddies.
After party is still on.
Nailed it, b.
Local awards are the first step up for junior creatives who get a nice ad past the tricky client that none of the seniors want to work on. Not quite up to national or international standards. But a nice ad, nonetheless. It feels like everyone has given up this year.
Maybe Clems are saying these awards are only relevant when we win them.
It wasn’t going to be their year and Biggs was refusing to carry Mescall on stage.
Excellent news, the most over priced torturous rubbish in which you are forced to sit down and what the most boring awards Ceremony, even the Brownlow is more exciting.
People just want to get drunk together and have a good time, not be waterboarded.
Just get everyone together and have a big Christmas party.
This is the best news the Australian Advertising Industry has had since 1955.
When Patts dropped out of this a couple of years ago it became a bit pointless. In a global context, It’s a pretty small pool of work left to judge.
The best bit was catching up with industry mates which I hope will continue. And I don’t see why it shouldn’t.
MADC is the one award show everybody in Melbourne looks forward to. Getting chopped with mates, picking up some metal if you’re lucky. Can’t believe sore losers have killed it.
Feels kind of machiavellian to me, like a way for the so called big shops to protect their creative sheen on a local level – especially when a few places invite their good ad lovin’ clients along.
