IPA Business & Agency Leadership Residential 2019 to equip managers to become leaders

The advertising and marketing landscape is evolving at a seemingly impossible pace, creating enormous challenges for industry leaders, both experienced and emerging. The long-standing question of whether leaders are born or made is becoming less relevant.

The real question today is whether leaders can adapt and lead through change.

That is the message from industry leaders who have shaped this year’s agenda for The Communication Council’s IPA Business & Agency Leadership Residential course.

To be held in Sydney from 11 August, the three-day, immersive residential course aims to equip the leaders of today and tomorrow with the tools to adapt and thrive in an era of massive change.

The course will be chaired by Publicis Groupe Australia and NZ CEO Michael Rebelo (left), whose agency leadership over the past 20 years has spanned re-building, re-purposing, starting-up, acquiring and integrating agencies to deliver growth through creativity. The Publicis Groupe is the third largest communications company in the world

Co-chairing the course will be Laura Aldington (right), Host/Havas CEO, who has spent more than 20 years working in the UK, the USA and Australia with some of the world’s most famous brands.

Says Aldington: “The principles of great leadership are relatively straightforward in theory, but that does not make them easy to put into practice. This course is designed to get to the heart of how you transition into an agency leadership role, with practical insight and advice that can be put to immediate use.”

The course chairs said that there is no doubt that as the industry evolves, the challenges of leadership evolve with it, but that leaders seem to be in constant conflict with themselves. While clients are looking for marketing transformation across their complete customer journey, for many, expertise often resides in traditional communication solutions.

The agenda for this year’s IPA Business & Agency Leadership course will address key industry issues including the fact that competition for consumers’ attention continues to fragment as they spread their time across multiple platforms, devices and content, yet the principles of effective advertising remain the same as advertisers and agencies grapple with reaching mass audiences.

For many ‘flat is the new growth’ in the consolidated marketing, media and entertainment sector, while agency leaders are searching for new remuneration systems based on outputs and value creation rather than inputs such as time spent creating and producing.

In this maelstrom, how will leadership adapt – and how do you prepare for leadership in the first place? These are the sorts of questions that emerging leaders in the Australian industry will need to get their heads around in order to fulfil their leadership potential.

Says Tony Hale, CEO, The Communications Council: “In an era of unprecedented change, it’s vital that our industry produces leaders who have the ability to adapt. It’s a big leap from managing to leading and there’s no question that as our industry evolves, the challenges of leadership are becoming more complex. Our immersive IPA residential courses are renowned for providing the tools leaders need to grapple with the myriad of issues they will have to face.”

IPA residential courses are noted for their informative and interactive speaker sessions with renowned industry leaders as well as their project briefs where delegates work in groups.

The full line-up of highly-respected agency and marketing leaders who will speak at the IPA Business & Agency Leadership course will be announced in the coming weeks. The course is highly recommended for group account directors or equivalent who are looking to position themselves to take the next crucial steps to leadership.
