Here’s to you, Lou
US singer and former Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed has died at the age of 71.
After quitting The Velvet Underground in 1970, Reed released his self-titled debut in 1972, but it wasn’t until the Bowie-produced LP Transformer later that year – which featured both Perfect Day and Walk on the Wild Side – that brought him chart success.
Perfect Day enjoyed a second bout of success in 1996 when it was featured in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting, and again a year later when it was re-recorded by a celebrity cast for a BBC commercial.
Music producer Brian Eno summed up their influence by saying: “The first Velvet Underground album only sold 10,000 copies, but everyone who bought it formed a band.”
The song Perfect Day was also used on this Playstation 4 spot created by BBH New York and is this week’s top pic on Bestads.

long live lou
When my son was two weeks old he was given a CD by a friend – Lou Reed’s “Transformer”. His love of music has never waivered. Thank you Lou Reed (and Garry Wapshott)
one of my favourite lou reed stories goes back many years ago. An agency in london wanted to use his song’perfect day’ for an egg campaign. The agency shot the commercial and just before the campaign was due to release, lou reed decided that he did’nt want them to use his song and if they did,he would take out ads saying how much he hated eggs. the agency pulled the campaign.
It’s a rip off of The Ship Song Project for SOH.
