Gabberish #22: The Mind Control Issue

Gabberish is crossing the pond for its 22nd edition, guest edited by Ellen Fromm, a senior copywriter hailing from Australia but calling Colenso BBDO Auckland home for the last three years.

We were lucky to catch Ellen as she packed up her life to head to Amsterdam, where she starts her next adventure and ad gig with AKQA at the end of this month.

With so much going on, it’s no wonder Ellen has chosen to focus on Mind Control. No, not the kind that some advertisers attempt to exert. The kind that allows us to manage the rough and tumble of our day-to-day in an industry riven with stress and steamrolling along at a relentless pace.

Think of it as a mental and physical health tool box, full of tips and tricks creative minds can draw on when this year inevitably gets nuts.

Says Ellen: “This is something I’m so passionate about. The way I see it, we run brain marathons day after day. As creative people, our brains are our jobs. Our brains are idea factories. Yet so often we forget to look after our beautiful brains. I hope people can take things from this issue of Gabberish and use it to help them — even a little!”

The Mind Control issue features an interview with Cassie Roma — a corporate high flyer turned kindness coach who shares a business case for compassion. Colenso BBDO Auckland ECD, Maria Devereux, shares her passion for Craftism, Nick Dellabarca and Liz Richards share the not so secrets behind their 2394 day (and counting) creative partnership, and director Jamie Lawrence shares lessons in resilience.

There are also management tips to help creatives get the best out of themselves, ways to avoid burnout by treating your body right, brilliant brain doodles…and even a 60-minute yin flow yoga workout designed to “undo the damages of ads.”

Who doesn’t need to mainline a bit of that?
