Espresso shots to big shots: BCM Group offers QUT students paid internships

BCM Group is excited to offer a paid internship opportunity to final year advertising or marketing students at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), designed to kick-start their real-world careers in advertising.

Over 50 QUT students have now had the opportunity to take a deep-dive into agency land and gain real-world workplace experience across BCM Group integrated creative, media, digital and PR offering. The internship program encourages students to explore all aspects the agency to help determine where their passions lie.

Some of BCM Group’s most successful interns have gone on to accomplish amazing achievements throughout their careers. Callum Spencer, who interned in 2013, has gone on to work as an associate creative director at Apple in San Francisco. Quinn Nyguen completed her internship six years ago and now works as a programmatic specialist at Google. B&T 30 Under 30 Grand Prix winner, Anais Reed, is also an internship alumni.

Says Phil McDonald, partner and managing director at BCM Group: “When I started out in the industry 100 years ago, there were multiple entry points into the business. Technology has meant that most of them don’t exist anymore, so these internships are all about opening a door to young and ambitious students to become the future of our industry. Not only that it provides them with an income as they finish their degree and start their career.”

In more recent years, Meg Jenkins, who completed her internship in 2020, now works with BCM Group as a copywriter and has gone on to win a Gold Pencil at the Brisbane AWARD School program. Additionally, Ellie Fraser was hired as a media coordinator immediately upon completion of an eight-week internship.

Says Fraser: “My time as an intern at BCM gave me the industry experience I’ve been looking for and provided me an opportunity to apply the skills I’ve gained over the course of my degree in a workplace environment. It was an invaluable experience and I’m very grateful to have been given the opportunity.”

Adds McDonald: “We are very excited to continue our long-standing partnership with QUT and build on the success of our internship programs to give QUT students real, on the job experience and enable them to begin and achieve successful careers in media and advertising.”
