Director James Chappell brings ‘Shelly’ to the big screen at Flickerfest
Shelly premiered at Flickerfest last month in an exciting moment for its cast and crew. Written and directed by James Chappell, the short stars well known Australian actor Gary Sweet and centres around the story of a widowed fisherman Keith Herring, whose quiet, solitary life begins to unravel after hauling in an unexpected catch.
It’s a beautiful story of grief and isolation, where devotion slips into delusion, and love from the deep starts to test the limits of morality.
Chappell’s directorial approach doesn’t rush or over-explain – it gives the audience space to sit with the characters and allows the meaning to unfold naturally
While Shelly begins its life on the festival circuit, Chappell is already looking ahead and keen to sink his teeth into his next commercial project.
In a recent interview, Chappell talks through the making of Shelly, working with Gary Sweet, and where he’s hoping to take things next. You can listen to the full conversation here.
