DDB presents Volkswagen Polo, condensed
Two guys effortlessly condense an awful lot into a small spot. Much like Volkswagen have done with their new Polo.
A new TVC via DDB Sydney, directed by Paul Middleditch via Plaza Films.
Steve Wakelam and Grant McAloon, Group Creative Heads, DDB Sydney, said: “Rather than fighting against what could have been a long, dry list of product features we decided to turn them into our creative ideas and hopefully have a bit of fun along the way. More importantly we managed to get a Chicago song in there, a long term professional goal.”
The purpose of the new ad is feature-focused and timed to coincide with the launch of the new Polo GTI in December.
Jutta Friese, GM Marketing, Volkswagen said: “This campaign serves to highlight the key features of the Polo in an engaging way. The result is a really humorous TVC that will be both eye (and ear) catching to the audience.”
The 30-second Polo TVC aired for the first time on Sunday 7 November. This version of the ad will run for three weeks, followed by a new version for the Polo GTI airing from Sunday 5 December.

Saw this on TV. Thought it was a coffee commercial.
I like it! Nice one Grant!
Luv it!
I like it. I like that it has actual content. I like that they’re saying something about the bloody car for a change, not driving it around in an animated world with a girl-band-of-the-moment soundtrack where monsters are trying to eat the car and all their friends live in bubbles.
Nice nice nice.
But have to ask – are the 2 dudes, like, on a date?
What an absolute pile of…well you know what.
I mean how many times has this idea been done before??????????
To me, it feels like it’s a piss take on advertising. Like a comedy sketch.
In no way would I want to buy the car, it actually turns me off the car. I feel like the creators are having a laugh.
Just my opinion.
to me, this looks like a return to form for volkswagen in australia. a simple spot with a simple idea that allows the brand to talk about the product features. and it fits the VW’s brand voice too. nice. more please.
this is filmed outside my house and for that I love it!
A very, very, poor mans copy of the brilliant Fed Ex spot . Awful.
I think John Moschitta did it better:

Well the public will like it. That’s what it’s all about right?
Love it – the music made me laugh too. it’s simple and funny… doesn’t take itself (or advertising) too seriously. Sounds like vw may be starting to do something other than shit these days.
Prefer Bec and Gary’s Mini Wheats/Maxi taste answer to the same brief from JWT a few years ago.
An entire relationship packed into 30 seconds is a lot funnier than a list of car features.
AWFUL. Like a bad retail ad.
Take a look at what VW do overseas… then a good hard look at this.
Please.
anything that gets chicago on air is good as far as im concerned
Okay, so it’ll work for TV. And for radio. But I wonder how it’ll translate to print?
How will it translate into print 10.11? Who gives a fuck. This is an excellent TV commercial. Imagine, a car commercial with an idea!
Potentially good (but done before) idea. Seriously crap execution.
Alright ‘Media guru’, so you’re not a fan of media neutral ideas then. I guess that’s why you’re in media…you just book the space you’re told to.
What is the idea? Shove in all the client product points and try to make it into a gag?
And how does the track tie in with the line: ‘Volkswagen, condensed’?
Am I missing something?
So they condensed the brochure into 30 seconds? Now if they could have condensed something interesting, like the aforementioned example of a relationship – which I think was for chicken btw, not cereal, unless both have done it – it may have been more entertaining.
thanks guru.

I saw this on TV and thought it was good. More drivers should do speed.
why do they keep putting guys in the Polo ads when it’s obviously a girls’ car?
Woa, excellent tv commercial? C’mon. It is very ok. Nothing more.
Creative Group Heads.
Slightly pretentious when you’re the only ‘creative team’. Who were you group heading? Yourselves?
@10:11
see 12:41 for one way it could work in print i suppose
don’t think it’s amazing, but it certainly rather good
12:13 – yes apparently you are
for an explanation of the idea, see all the other anonymouses
i think it’s good and funny, perhaps a bit gay, but good (but then i got it, which helps)
Funny. got it. like the way it seems to take the piss out of ads a bit
seriously, this is not very good at all. condensed rubbish actually.
Ok 2.04pm, I’ve had another look. And unless I’m a complete fuckwit, I still can’t see any correlation between the song ‘If you leave me now/Baby please don’t go’ and the line ‘Volkswagen, condensed’.
Please, enlighten me and everyone else.
something interesting is happening on these comments boards…
people seem to be having quite divergent opinions finally — either lots of love or quite a bit of hate rather than all the same.
keep it up
‘Borrowing’ ideas from elsewhere is one thing, but lifting them from your own brand and doing a poorer job of expressing them is something else entirely.

Definitely not up to the mark.
Maybe they had a real budget restraint. If so this is okay. Not great. Just okay. A bit like Federal Express fast talking man but different.
If no restraint they could’ve done this far better visually. IMHO.
love it, really smart

The Cannes winning VW animated spots you put up are nothing like the tvc in question. Are you stark raving mad????
Derrrrrrr!!!!!
Has no-one noticed that they don’t actually condense anything? They just speak fast.
That’s not condensing.
They should have dropped words, or vowels, or consonants.
Fck u gys r dm.
wow 12:04, what a brilliant solution!!!! that ad would make so much sense –
you must be really good at your job.
saw this last night – made me stop and watch – i likey
Nov 10 2.49pm –
When it comes to work like this, that is really only wallpaper, I suspect you will find that many of the positive comments come from the production house (get in fast and first and get some positive spin) or the agency. The negative comments come from competitors, followed by more positive commentary from those involved. That is the benefit and perhaps the attraction of an anonymous blog.
Hey, what say CB set up two concurrent blogs Michael. One that is anonymous and one where real people can have a real say. Be interesting to compare
another by Captain Hitormiss.
This spot is a total piece of crap wow two annoying idiots yabbering back and forth about crap in annoying voices and looking stupid wow really makes me want one of these
Does anyone know what song is used? Can someone please tell me! Sun.dark@live.com
I like it. There are not enough adverts featuring gay guys on TV.
Might be brave for Volkswagen to focus so tightly on that demographic though.
