Kat Mercer, Freelance Art Director at DDB Sydney and the judge ofthe February/March competition, said: “One entry stood out and that wasthe topical ‘Black Friday’ ad forBooksellers New Zealand. I was immediately seduced by the beautifullycrafted art direction – the tiny skull in the border design, the bullethole in the fabric, the perfect kerning, then I realised I should getout more. But first I’ll make sure it’s not Friday the 13th.”

Highly Commended

An honourable mention also went to Y&R Auckland for their ‘Toll This’ ad for Burger King.

Client: Burger King

Agency: Y&R Auckland

Creative Director: Vaughn Davis

Art Director: David Bell

Writer: Richard Loseby

Judge’s comment: “There are a number of reasons why I liked the Burger King ‘TollThis’ ad. One, it was a full page ad – hard to sell even when not in arecession – secondly it had an image of something flipping the bird -always hard to sell – and thirdly it was interactive.  It asked you totake the ad into Burger King to get your $2 toll back by way of adiscount on your burger. A cleverly packaged coupon with attitude thatworked perfectly with their ‘Let nothing get in the way’ strategy.”
