Barnardos Aotearoa encourages Kiwis to ‘invest in children’ in new campaign via Eightyone

Eightyone, Supernormal and EightyOne Media have launched ‘Invest in Children’, a new campaign for Barnardos Aotearoa that asks New Zealanders to rethink what it means to donate, by treating support for children’s futures as a financial investment with a proven, outsized return.

The campaign borrows the language and visual world of financial investment, return, yield, ticker tape, to make a case rooted in real data: independent analysis shows every $1 invested in Barnardos’ core social work services creates $9.10 of social value for New Zealand, including improved wellbeing and life outcomes, higher future incomes, and reduced demand on government and social services over time.

The campaign launched at a private event for Barnardos supporters in Wellington, where a ceremonial investment bell was rung to mark the occasion. That evening, the Sky Tower was lit with the campaign’s distinctive ticker-tape visual, displaying the names of children supported by Barnardos, an average of 570 children, young people and whānau every week — as a striking reminder that there is another kind of investment worth backing.

Barnardos Chief Executive Matt Reid says New Zealanders are well practised in thinking about investment in financial terms, but the most important returns are the ones that change the course of a child’s life: “Every child is born full of potential. They have the potential to learn, grow, build relationships, contribute and shape the future of Aotearoa. But not every child has the same opportunity to realise that potential. We know that when children and whānau get the right support at the right time, those barriers can be overcome. That is an investment worth making.”

The campaign is supported by wealth app Sharesies, which allows its customers to donate to Barnardos directly through the app, bringing the worlds of financial and social investment together in one platform.

Says Leighton Roberts, co-founder and co-CEO, Sharesies: “Time is the most powerful tool in investing, and that same compounding effect applies to how we invest in our children too. The earlier we start our support, the more impact we can have on children’s lives. We’re proud to support Barnardos on this campaign.”

The campaign’s centrepiece film was produced by Supernormal, directed by Reagen Butler.

Says Chris Bleackley of Eightyone: “Huge thanks to Matt and the team at Barnardos, to Sharesies, and to Reagen, Matt McKenzie and everyone at Supernormal for bringing this to life with such craft and care.”
