Australian-owned Yellow Tail to be first wine brand to air a Super Bowl spot in 40 years
Australian-owned wine label Yellow Tail is betting big on next month’s Super Bowl, buying up local ad spots of Fox stations in 70 markets across the US to air a new, 30-second commercial, created by New York based The Burns Group.
The media buy, which circumvents the exclusive national in-game alcohol category deal enjoyed by Anheuser-Busch, is expected to reach an expected 100 million households. It is the first wine brand to advertise on the Super Bowl in 40 years.
The ad, helmed by Dutch-born director Harald Zwart, features ‘Yellow Tail Guy’and a kangaroo enjoying Yellow Tail wine in various locations, at a party, a backyard BBQ and the beach.
Yellow Tail is distributed in the US by Deutsch Family Wines and Spirits.

This is so bad that it makes vomit, vomit.
Wow….That is quite possibly the biggest piece of shit i have ever seen!
Let’s not.
HA!
Hahahaha this would be funny if it wasn’t so bad.
Disgraced on the world stage.
Someone involved says…
“Absolutely no CG. I want to do the roo in camera, with animatronics, it will feel way more visceral. Viewers will have a greater connection with the character because its real…”
yeah… no.
we don’t think that.
we think it looks cheap and half ass and like something from 1982.
sorry.
What a shame, that they didn’t spend more money on the production values and creative, and less on the media spend. Id be ashamed to have to have more then 144,000,000 million viewers see how I value my own brand.
That’s not a Roo, it’s a dog.
Animatronic roo would be great if they had money to do it properly. I think the overseas director use to bigger budgets wanted it done in camera but all they had money for was some leftover roo from the 1980’s, instead of making a new one.
Which says they didn’t have money for good cgi either.
Regardless, the script needs to be better in the first place if you’re going to air it during the Super Bowl. Possibly good intentions but fail on many fronts.
This is shit.
I don’t give a fuck about what you believe in.
Now go back to selling me your product instead of telling me what you believe. Religion has no place in Satan’s whorehouse.
The quality of the ad perfectly matches the quality of the wine. Brand consistency in action.
some clients just don’t get it….and it’s the reason why then they get this.
Lets hope for their sake that the kangaroo packs a punch, and sells them product.
…doubt it though that this unmemorable spot will do just that.
You get what you deserve.
Let’s just hope Americans are dumb enough to connect
A. Aussie Guy
B. Kangaroo
C. Some brand of Aussie wine with Yellow in the name (and hope they don’t buy Yellowglen).
Total disaster of an ad. “… because at Yellow Tail, we believe in fun.” ??? What?! Stop reading the damn creative brief!!! Then, cue the hot babe??? Who do they think their target is???
I like the dorks at the party.
Actually, I just like it.
