Air NZ’s Rico sends an Australia Day message

Air New Zealand, via agency .99 Auckland has created an online Australia Day message from Rico, their well-meaning, budding travel author whose comments are full of unintentional innuendos. The character Rico was created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and this web film was produced by The Downlow Concept.

Dear God!
You’d think the country that gave the world The Flying Conchords would be able to go beyond the most banal of double entendres and the 50 year old idea of using a foreign accent for their national airline, but no, it seems not. (Just google Jose Jimenez to see just how old this kind of thing is.) The two or three I’ve looked at are all incredibly crass and low brow – not the kind of ads that are going to draw me away from Emerites.
Why do so many people in advertising write like they’re in grade 2?
@2:34 Because advertising is the only (supposedly intellectual) industry that will put up with bad grammar, spelling and punctuation. That and most of them never went to school, too busy smoking bongs and being ‘creative’.
Your rong in the hed to even sujesst thay mite be a bit simpel.
I too fly Emirates.
Why does there have to be negative comments on very funny & amusing ads? (you obviously have no sense of humour) Crass!! what are you talking about, a rather moronic view.
Rico is great & the ads are so refreshing after some truly boring & badly thought up ideas for tvc’s on at the moment. He is different and engaging & the music is awesome.
I say bring on more of the same.
4:29- did you have anything to do with the spot? Sounds like it! … and the music awesome?!?! I know- you must be the muso!!! Also well written 2:34 but please stop insulting grade 2’ers.
a good idea and the puppet is well executed but the character’s dialogue and accent are well below par.
2:34 – Our idea’s are dumbed down to an even lower common denominator and you’re worried about shpelling or punktuashion?
Sheesh!
Makes more sense than Sam.
The mangey puppet is not the only thing that stinks about this campaign – check out the bad acting based on bad scripts in the ‘relationship’ spot if you want to experience the definition of ‘cringeworthy’. I can’t believe so many people (all professionals, no doubt) who approved this campaign idea and rubber stamped this wanna-be Aggro. Absolutely embarrassing.
Hey Nome Deplumme,
nope had nothing to do with the ad, certainly not with the music – is it so hard for you to believe that some actually like Rico? that they dont need to dissect every aspect but can just enjoy for enjoyments sake??
made me smile 🙂
It’s funny. I know that there is a minority that doesn’t like it but there are always those people that complain about even the slightest controversy. Instead of being offended people should just enjoy it for what it is, a light hearted and funny add campaign that doesn’t take itself seriously.
