Whybin\TBWA Melbourne looks set to pick up the lion’s share – if not all – of $50m-plus ANZ account
UPDATE: CB hears that Whybin\TBWA Melbourne is set to be awarded the main corporate branding account for ANZ.
Further inquiries this afternoon – still not officially confirmed – suggest the entire business has gone to TBWA.
However, one source says DDB Melbourne’s Rapp/Tribal is still in with a chance to retain the below-the-line component.
Neither DDB or Whybin\TBWA was able to comment as of late today.
All this follows the bank splitting with M&C Saatchi.
“I can confirm ANZ will not be renewing its contract with M&C Saatchi at the end of the month,” said Tom Dery, M&C Saatchi’s worldwide chairman.
“It’s hard to pick one reason why it’s happened,” said Dery. “We understand organizations change in style and structure and it may well reflect what’s happening within the ANZ.”
M&C Saatchi will continue to operate in Melbourne, according to Dery, with eight of the ten people who work on ANZ in Melbourne relocated to the Sydney office.
Jo Rozario is the managing director of the Melbourne office and ANZ was the office’s largest account.
Dery said the agency had enjoyed a lengthy, fruitful relationship with ANZ.
“Fourteen years is a long time in anybody’s language but it is a lifetime in advertising, especially for an agency to partner a blue chip client. In that time we’ve done some truly category-changing work for ANZ that we’re very proud of.”

this is a shame, i really like the ANZ ads.
Fourteen years for good reason. A long history of good ANZ ads by M&C. g
The Barbara ads were excellent.
That’s a shame M&C. You’ve done some of Australia’s best bank work with ANZ.
‘There’s never been a better time to move.’
‘You buy the house, we’ll come to the party.’
‘The person with the most property wins.’
They were all ads I wish I’d done, and my knob of a bank client wouldn’t approve ANY ONE of them.
And no, I don’t work for M&C but shame guys. Shame.
Yes, you did some fantastic work for ANZ. Well done for making it to 14 years.
The bars been set high for the next agency to tackle that account. Great work from M&C to date.
You find the house, we’ll come to the party was the Palace I think.
But yeah, M&C did some great work for them over the years. But who knows why they’ve shifted? Accounts rarely shift just because of the work.
M&C did some great work for the brand. Sad loss.
DDB already had a large chunk of ANZ, plus they picked up the MD and CD defectors from M&C. Makes you wonder why they didn’t get all the business? Obviously that was the master plan.
The big winner is TBWA.
I’m betting they won’t be without a bank client for long.
How many banks are TBWA allowed to do work for?
The sydney office has at least two.
Get your agency creds into RaboBank quickly.
Well at least they went out with a bang. Although I’m sad I’m no longer gonna see Barbs anymore.
I love Barbs so much I want to work for the bank she works for. God it would be good to treat my cancerous clients like that – I’d go home stressfree! Go barby I want to be you.
I have loved the anz work, but I have to say I thought Barbara didn’t work at all. Other stuff great though.
Bet Westpac is already on the line for M&C
It’s your money Scott!
ClientsFromHell, “You buy the house we’ll come to the party” was written by Simon Collins at The Campaign Palace.
‘The falcon’ was the best for me. Great idea. Great symbol. Funny ads.
Yep, Westpac with M&C, Dery and Eales reunited, by month’s end.
What about the people who’ve just been fired from M&C? Will they be put back on to work on Westpac?
Lame
TBWA played a blinder. Clever.
Be interesting to hear the spin from DDB. Talk about sand slipping through shaky fingers. Nice try but just half a cigar still.
Yes, M&C might just get Westpac. Fingers crossed.
How about Westpac’s soon-to-be-launched Bank of Melbourne?
…stash your money was GOLD!
Banks are a bunch of cunts though aren’t they? Good ads are just lies from these corporate terrorists.
Why would ANZ want to hitch their wagon to the Melbourne Whybins office? Unlike Sydney it’s full of dinosaurs.
Been a while since you left eh 2.47?
But geez what a clever bunch of dinosaurs, if they get the lot what will you say 2.47?
I hear from the grapevine that will also be fired, Micheal can you confirm?
? 3.53?
3:53. There seems to be a critical omission in your submission.
It’s true DDB are a bunch of losers isn’t it? I mean they’d never do a great M&C ad like the Falcon would they?
Unofficially I can confirm Whybins have won the lot
….and despite M&C’s protestations Mark will no longer be working on ANZ (as a ‘second tier’ supplier or otherwise).
More blood letting there too I’d wager
@ 6.11pm – DDB created the Falcon Campaign you idiot….
M&C like to do their spin on this blog.
talking to themselves?
Scott had a “mate”. Nuff said.
Look its pretty simple.
The Palace by and large did shit work for the ANZ and got the arse.
M&C Melbourne was founded on ANZ. Dery, Daddo, Box, Taylor, Banks et al did a great job for years.
Then there was a fair bit of change..some good work and a fair bit of shit.
The account fragmented clients moved on, management changed.
Like most relationships it sours over time when the romance fades.
Sure Babs was a laugh and probably all the boys at Clems needed to come in and smash them to pieces with the nab campaign.
Bad luck to M&C on ANZ…but well done on Tennis Aus.
Good luck on Optus.
PS what goes around comes around…you never really want to go up against the Tom’s and Whittle..they are a very slick act.
Maybe too slick….and oily based on the deal Worked in the 90s…it’s a different jungle out there now
8.06pm is right, DDB did create the Falcon campaign. Ironically, none of the creatives responsible for all that work are there any more.
ANZ had decided months ago to leave M&C. DDB did the spade work. Trouble is, they obviously screwed it and lost badly. If not they would have won it all. Fact.
TBWA just outsmarted them on all levels.
6.11pm – I think 8.06pm and 6.11am have just proved how difficult it is to express irony in print.
Daft buggers
So do TBWA in NZ get the local work or is the plan to just crank everything out of Aus and run throughout the region?
TBWA has won big time. Congratulations!
DDB just couldn’t convince ANZ they could handled the lot. The painful truth is that the local boys just aren’t up to it. So back to square one for them. Doing the deal with the ex-MD of M&C was stupid. Just reeked of the old and wasn’t a popular idea anyway with those that really mattered.
10.42am raises an interesting point. DDB Auckland are doing some really nice work. So the bank might leave it at that. However, they must have helped on the pitch, so maybe a bit of their shiny magic has been tarnished by Melbourne’s clumsy touch.
Plus never underestimate the shrewdness of TBWA. DDB did and look what happened.
Well played TBWA. The biggest coup in advertising in the last 5 years.
How many people have underestimated Scott Whybin and his team over the years? Dinosaurs’? I would prefer this agency working on my account than the surface skimming creative water beetles currently masquerading in agencies around this country. They have all forgotten Scott’s Bank credentials which are impeccable, ‘Remember “It’s your money Ralph”, The Goldstein campaign for ASB bank in NZ that was created in the Melbourne office of Whybin TBWA. and as for the stupid ill-informed anonymous flat earther who said “Scott had a “mate”. Nuff said”. Whybin won it on great creative & strategic talent which is obviously something you lack
Well done. Congrats TBWA.
I worked on the Whybin pitch (only reason I’m posting anonymously).
The work was excellent, the strategy equally so.
Some old hands might be there, but they’re still miles ahead of most of the new players in the game who (traditionally) think anyone over 35 is out of touch.
Good ideas still resonate, regardless of the times.
And while Scott is clearly the leader, there were upwards of 20 people involved (of all ages) and from all areas of the various businesses in the TBWA fold.
The fact they have won this from M&C should indicate that you should never underestimate the Melbourne crew.
Well said 4.12pm. TBWA deserve the congratulations. This win is a massive coup. Smart leadership and experienced creative firepower.
A huge embarrassment for DDB. They totally blew it big time. Lost what they thought was ‘so in the bag’. Delusional leadership and obviously wrong creative. Stupid.
Let’s hope M&C dust themselves off and pick up another account soon.
Surely Jason isn’t replacing Barbara?
Oh for fucks sake, would you lot just shut up?
If you knew anything you wouldn’t be dumb enough to comment.
Shut up.
1.02am touch a raw nerve did we?
And no congrats for TBWA?
So what is the story according to you? Please save us from our apparent stupidity. The headline here says TBWA looks set to pick up the lion’s share-if not all…
We know M&C have lost all the business.
We know DDB had some credit card business but have obviously failed to impress ANZ or they would be announced as picking up the lion’s share.
So again, according to you, what is the real story?
Or are you too busy lamenting what could have been?
Go after Westpac, they’ve been without a real agency ever since they jumped into bed with Lavender.
Anonymous anonymous anonymous… what a privilege to be anonymous , what a wonderfully warm and fluffy blanket that is…
Well said 4.12pm and a big Congratulations to Whybin TBWA …. you deserve it.
DDB. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Again.
Congratulations TBWA.
