Marcel Sydney promotes Wes Hawes to ECD role replacing Scott Huebscher who has departed
Wesley Hawes has been appointed executive creative director of Marcel Sydney. His appointment is being announced alongside significant business developments, with the agency taking on lead duties for Foxtel and assignments from Rio Tinto.
Hawes takes over as ECD at Marcel Sydney following the departure of previous ECD Scott Huebscher who has left the agency.
As Hawes steps up as Marcel Sydney’s ECD, the agency continues its bold work for Tiger Beer across Asia Pacific and builds new partnerships with Rio Tinto and Foxtel. For Foxtel, Marcel joins the roster as lead brand and ideation agency. Marcel is also developing Rio Tinto’s first national consumer facing advertising campaign, expanding the campaign from its WA launch in March this year.
Hawes has been deputy ECD of Marcel Sydney since the beginning of 2017. Prior to that he was joint-ECD at TBWA\Sydney in a period when the agency was awarded significant industry accolades and attained sustained growth through a series of strong new business wins.
In his 18 years in the industry, Hawes has led creative direction for prominent agencies, including BBH London, winning Cannes Lions accolades in every competitive category. He has been behind many iconic campaigns, including the Barclaycard ‘Waterslide’, the Axe Apollo Space Academy, Tango ‘Argh!’, Foxtel’s ‘Make It Yours’, and most recently Marcel’s global Tinder activation, ‘Represent Love’.
Says Hawes: “At Marcel we produce provocative, powerful work for brands like Tiger Beer and Tinder, but often this work appears in international markets outside Australia. The recent Foxtel win is a great opportunity for Marcel to make a visible and effective local impact. I’m super excited to be leading Marcel into this next stage of its development.”
Says David Nobay, creative chairman, Marcel Sydney: “Wes exudes a natural, creative generosity that makes those around him drawn to collaborate on everything he touches. It’s a rare gift, and we’re lucky to call him our ECD.”
Says Gavin Levinsohn, CEO, Marcel Sydney: “As deputy ECD Wes has built strong relationships with our clients and has been central to our agency leadership, creative work and culture. He was a clear choice as our new ECD and I’m happy that we could do that from within our own team.”

Someone please explain the difference, especially in a smallish agency, between the positions of Creative Chairman & ECD.
Demian was unsuccessful then
CCO, ECD, Deputy ECD and no creative teams.
But Wes is solid.
congrats wes!!!
Foxtel and Nescafe…
Shivers, that’s not an agency, it’s purgatory.
