Why state-of-the-art, audio post-production studio Final Sound is a creative hub for sound
Tucked away on a quiet Melbourne street in Balaclava, lies an unassuming brick facade with windows that glow with amber light. This building is home to Final Sound, a state-of-the-art, audio post-production studio that specialises in sound for advertising, film and television.
While its exterior may seem modest, stepping inside is like being transported through a portal to another world – a world of creativity, imagination, good times and sound expertise.
The moment you walk up the stairs you’re greeted by friendly faces, a relaxed vibe that feels more like a chic New York apartment than an office, and some of the best coffee in the hood. But this isn’t just about aesthetics, Final Sound is about transporting you to another place, and in the world of audio, that place can be anywhere.
Final Sound has been weaving its sonic magic for over 15 years, delivering award-winning, top-tier work on time and on budget, while making their clients feel right at home. Founded in 2007, the studio quickly carved out a niche as a unique space that blends professionalism with a laid-back approach. And occasional Martinis.
Their impressive advertising client roster includes well-known brands such as NAB, Toyota, Sportsbet, Engie, Lexus, Bunnings, Goodyear, Mitsubishi, L’Oreal, Kmart, Officeworks, Specsavers and more.
Over the years, Final Sound has built a reputation for delivering world-class audio to all the local broadcasters, as well as international heavyweights like the BBC, ITV, Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+ – and they continue to expand their collaboration with partners and agencies both Australia-wide, and across the globe. From sound design to editing, ADR to foley, music supervision and everything from 5.1 Surround to home Dolby Atmos sound mixing, the team has every corner of sound post-production covered.
In addition to the Advertising and commercials space, Final Sound works on flagship TV series’ such as The Voice, My Kitchen Rules, The Hundred with Andy Lee, and Dancing with the Stars. Their portfolio also extends into narrative features and award-winning television and feature documentaries. On the sports front, Final Sound has recently created a variety of promotional packages for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, AFL, NRL, NBL, and Cricket Australia.
Yet despite the range of projects, the team at Final Sound is adamant that they’re genre-agnostic, treating every project with the same dedication, no matter its size or scope. “We’re client-focussed and deadline-savvy on every project” explains Executive Producer Pip Wright. “Every project receives the same care, and we pride ourselves on creating a stress-free, fun, and collaborative experience with all our clients, regardless of where they’re based in the world or how big the budget is.”
Wright highlights the importance of being involved early in the creative process. “We love to get involved with decision making and creative choices as soon as possible,” she says. “Casting is one of the highlights of my job. Whether it’s finding the perfect actor, comedian, a street cast peep or even someone’s pet pooch, it’s all part of the fun. I also love working with the engineers to help create unique sound design elements. It’s about translating the creative brief into something ace that the audience will experience.”
The proof of their expertise is in the accolades. Final Sound’s projects have earned numerous awards, including recognition from the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), AACTA, the St Kilda Film Festival, Flickerfest, and the MADC Awards. They’ve also received Logie nominations and won a variety of awards in the film and documentary space.
If you’re looking to create fantastic sound, and a lasting and genuine relationship with a creative team, then Final Sound is where you’ll find your peeps. Director, Paul Shanahan encourages potential clients to reach out early, even before filming begins. “We are always available, in fact we love to discuss ideas from the get-go, and in doing so, we’re able to offer suggestions that ensure the best use of budget, right from the planning stage” he says, “So never think it’s too early to make contact.”
Sound design, according to Director Craig Conway, is a unique form of storytelling. “Sound impacts and touches people in ways that other art forms do not” he explains. “It can make you feel elated, make you cry, or even scare you. Sound design transforms how our brains interpret images. We love helping to transport audiences to another place entirely. It’s wonderful when a piece finally comes together.”
Final Sound is more than just a sound studio. It’s a creative hub, a sound playground, and a welcoming environment that invites collaboration and inspiration. Join their talented team of award-winning sound designers and composers and enjoy top-notch facilities while feeling right at home. They can’t wait to welcome you and maybe even share a martini or two along the way! The amber-lit staircase may be the first thing you notice, but what lies beyond is remembered long after.
