Following the success of last year’s Flush Your Ex campaign, Who Gives A Crap has launched a free one-off break-up service on February 13, World Dump Day – a day dedicated to helping people let go of those sh*tuationships, AKA the crappy relationships that are no longer serving them.
While Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love, research from the dump experts Who Gives A Crap shows one-in-three Aussies aren’t fully content in their relationships, with most Australians (57%) struggling to end a relationship because they don’t know what to say.
That’s a significant number of awkward silences, ghosting incidents, and clichéd “it’s not you, it’s me” texts clogging up the dating landscape.
Breakups can be hard – Who Gives A Crap’s new World Dump Day initiative aims to help Aussies have those difficult conversations in a humanely thoughtful way.
The launch comes as over half of Australians (53%) would be more likely to break up with someone on February 13, compared to 7% on Valentine’s Day – avoiding any awkward Valentine’s Day dates.
Despite no longer feeling served by their relationships, the research found nearly half of Aussies find breaking up difficult out of fear of hurting their partner’s feelings (44%). In addition, the research also revealed almost 1-in-5 Aussies have prolonged a break-up for up to three months.
Relationship and intimacy coach, Susie Kim explains the importance of letting go of relationships that are not serving you well: “With Valentine’s Day often a time to celebrate love and romance, it can also add an element of pressure to casual relationships and situationships. World Dump Day is here to take the pressure off – to help people say goodbye to the stinky relationships they’ve been struggling to let go of.
“While there is no set way to break up, being respectful of the other person’s emotions and behaving in a kind and mature manner is important for all involved. Although I encourage people to break up in person, I get that this is not always possible – however, I’d steer away from the late-night DM or, even worse, the slow ghost – it’s not very demure.”
Who Gives A Crap wants to help Aussies find the right words and start the conversation, without the robotic tone of AI, by writing the break-up letter they’ve been putting off. Plus, in a way, that’s much better for the environment.
Who Gives A Crap’s Brand Marketing Director Kat Kearney says she’s excited to launch this new initiative: “At Who Gives A Crap, while we are the self-proclaimed dump experts, we’ve also carved a path for helping Aussies work through their break-ups.
“After the success of Flush Your Ex, we’ve become known for helping people ‘let go’ on Valentines Day. Our research highlighted that it’s more than just love notes people are holding onto, the majority of Aussies aren’t happy in their relationships. We all know an incredible person settling for a crappy situationship, but breaking up isn’t always easy and part of that is finding the right words. We saw the opportunity for our incredible writers to help people out here. Penning break up notes with humanity and humour at their heart.”
