Vale Mara Marich: award-winning copywriter; Emmy-nominated writer, director + producer
Many in the advertising and TV industry in Australia and the US will be saddened to hear of the passing of the multi-talented Aussie expat Mara Marich, who has died in Houston, Texas after a long battle with cancer.
Marich began her career as an award-winning advertising copywriter on four continents, including Australia, most notably at The Campaign Palace, Melbourne, where she, together with Sarah Barclay, created the multi-awarded Antz Pantz ‘Sick ‘em Rex’ commercial, which won a Gold Pencil at AWARD in 1990 and was later voted ATV ‘Best Commercial of the last 20 Years’.
In 1992 Marich headed to the US, joining the high octane world of MTV New York’s famed on-air promotion department, graduating as an Emmy-nominated writer, director and producer.
As an inhouse, behind the scenes talent at MTV, she dreamed up new and enticing eye candy to make the masses salivate on a daily basis. Since then she successfully launched Dizzy, her own creative shop, and continued an international career spanning traditional and digital advertising and content. Over the last decade she headed her own successful creative development company, SuperMarketLove LLC.
Marich was fluent solving problems for many cultures. She launched web havens, television channels and shows in New York, Boston, Australia, India and Taiwan, and managed digital, film, TV and print projects worldwide, including London, Dublin, Sydney, Hong Kong, Paris, Cairo, Las Vegas, Dallas, San Francisco, San Diego, New Orleans and Los Angeles.
Marich enjoyed collaborating with others and listening to clients, to unlock the best strategy for messaging. As a hands-on creative, she worked closely with the subject matter, and was comfortable handling project management from A to Z. She liked the challenge of simplifying complicated subjects, and troubleshooting to find optimal solutions.
Marich was academically trained, graduating from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor’s Degree, Psychology and Economics. She was also a Lecturer and Advisor at Western Sydney Ad School.
Mara Marich picked Candy Shoes (created with Sarah Barclay at The Campaign Palace, Melbourne in 1987) as her favourite ad in Campaign Brief’s Millennium Book, published in 2000.
Marich (right) with art director partner Sarah Barclay in 1987, then a young creative team at The Ball Partnership in Sydney. While there they were featured in a September, 1987 Campaign Brief article ‘A Guide to Sydney’s hottest young creative talent’. Soon after they were snapped up by The Campaign Palace, Melbourne.

Mara was extraordinarily talented, my condolences to her family and friends ❤️
OMG! This is terrible news to hear. Mara was an incredible talent and an absolute trailblazer. Gone way too soon. Fly high Mara. Xx
Mara’s smile lit up a room and her talent shone brightly in everything she touched.
My sincere condolences to Mara’s family and her many friends.
Such sad news, a huge talent and just a truly lovely person. Condolences to her family.
Mara, loved the Western Suburbs of Sydney and did all she could to help foster the talent from there. She was a great mentor to the students. and her lecture on Westy principals, which I still use today, is priceless. She wanted Westys to take over the world.
A lifelong friend , I watched her excel at high school and absolutely strip us jocks for our Neanderthal behaviour with tongue firmly in her cheek. In our last conversation she said to me she would much rather be remembered for supporting the westie kids of Sydney than the echidna ad. And that summed her up , I will miss her terribly and so will the world.
So very sorry to hear this news. Condolences to Beau and Apollo. You were a great mum Mara. Sx
Terribly sad, another one of the greats gone.
Mara was smart, caring, kind and still very much an Aussie. She never forgot her school friends and was interested in their lives. I feel very privileged to have reconnected with her years ago and get to know the adult Mara and her amazing (too short) life. She had so much to give and her passing is very sad.
I am absolutely heartbroken. Mara and I have been working together for the last few years – we have lost one of the greats. Much love to Beau and Apollo xxx
So sorry to hear the news. My condolences go out to Beau and family. I got to know both though their volunteer efforts at our community tv station when they lived in the Princeton area. Always enjoyed the company and input. Sending our prayers.
During Mara’s life as a wife and Mother, no one ever boasted of her talents. I had no idea she was so successful. Her humility and kindness are two of her greatest traits.
Such a beautiful person I will always remember her smile, laugh and kindness. Sad to hear of her passing . Thoughts and prayers go out to her family and loved ones, friends and work colleagues.
The world is poorer without her presence, heaven gained an Angel. Her memory lives in what amazing things Mara Achieved. Legacy lives on
I had the privilege of meeting Mara in Bay St. Louis. Her sincere heart, fun personality, bright mind and contagious smile were attributes that made me like her instantly. My condolences to her beloved husband, son and family. For some, it only takes being in their presence for a few moments to know they are an exemplary soul. I feel blessed by having spent that cherished time sitting on the beach, having a glass of wine with her and her mother in law and hearing her fascinating stories of her life experiences and how proud she was of her son Apollo.
I’m heartbroken. I had known Mara from when we were just annoying little twits at JWT.
In recent years we reconnected and had some wonderful, inspirational and funny exchanges. She was particularly supportive during my battle with cancer a couple of years ago with regular messages asking for updates and sending lovely messages of encouragement that I told her and I really believed helped me.
It breaks my heart that I could nothing for her in return.
One of her last messages to me – “Chooka. Let’s be the kindness spreaders. I’ll take this hemisphere, you take the other, OK? Mx”
I had the privilege of going to high school with Mara in the western suburbs of Sydney (Chester Hill/Sefton). Mara was popular, intelligent, kind, pretty and very funny. She had a quick witt and made everyone feel important and included. Her beaming smile a great laugh will be missed by many. Gone too soon x
I met Mara at Princeton TV where I was a member (before I worked there) along with her husband Beau Tardy. She was cool, Australian, always wore red lipstick, had worked at MTV in the early days (Beau too) and hired me as AP and video editor for a few video projects. She spoke frequently of her award-winning commercial in Australia, Antz Pants, and how men took credit for her work early in her career and how she took her power back.
We worked together in the field, in her house, I even babysat for her son, Apollo a few times, we were friendly and I remember going to one of their parties and being the entertainment (singing with a band) and how kind and complementary she was of the band. She introduced me to the woman who played the voice of Daria during that party. Just a snapshot of some memories.
