Well known and loved Australian TVC director, Wayne Maule has been tragically killed in Thailand.
The director of major TVCs such as the second worldwide ‘I still callAustralia home’ TVC for Qantas and the ‘Where the bloody hell are you?”spot for Australian Tourism, Maule was quoting on scripts right upuntil the end. As of yesterday and in addition to his recent work inthe Middle East, he was in the midst of quoting a big Ford campaign outof JWT Shanghai and had just received some scripts for Sharp out ofVietnam.
According to reports, his motorbike collided with a six-wheel truckin Cherng Talay in Phuket yesterday afternoon. He was riding a HondaClick down Srisoonthorn Road towards Surin when the tragedy happened atabout 1:15pm.
Only this time last year, Maule decided to focus back on the land where his directingcareer began by joining Sydney-based Arithmetic.
Maule said at the time: “Apart from having done some ofmy best work with Australian agencies, I have a lot of family andfriends here and I miss that. After all this is where mychildren are.”
Most recently, best known in Australia for hisdirecting of the beautiful but controversial ‘Where The Bloody Hell AreYou?’ campaign for Australian Tourism and agency M&C Saatchi, Maulehas travelled the world working in Asia, The Middle East, Europe andAfrica since completing the second iconic Qantas’ I Still CallAustralia Home in 2004.
Arithmetic Executive Producer, AndrewMcPhail said of Maule at the time: “I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity representsuch an accomplished visual stylist like Wayne. Having worked with someof the best visual directors in the business. I am gobsmacked by howconsistently brilliant his TVCs are.”
Adds McPhail this morning: “Obviously we are deeply shocked at Wayne’s tragic passing. Wayne was a true journeyman. A man who always – after so many years being at the top of his game – continued to astound with the childlike enthusiasm combined with the consummate professionalism he brought to his directing. The loss of such a great artist is a profound loss to our industry and he shall be sorely missed. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife Bella and his family.”
Maule began his advertisingcareer in the UK with one of London’s most creative agencies BMP SJIPworking his way up to Art Director and Head Copywriter for a number ofagencies before being appointed Group Head of Leo Burnetts in Sydneythen Creative Director of J. Walter Thompson.
Being an accomplishedphotographer he quickly found himself directing what have since becomeiconic campaigns for Coca-Cola, Shell, Optus, Qantas and AustralianTourism to name but a few.

Wayne was such a talented person and a great friend. I worked with him on several projects but our friendship extended far beyond that. I was only speaking to him last week. My thoughts go out to Belinda and his children.
A true friend and a multi-talent. It’s very very sad news.
Bloody hell, that’s unbelievable. Why is it the good ones who are unfairly taken from us in cruel and untimely circumstances? This is a terrible shock.
Monty

Shocking news and very saddened. Cut one of my very first spots with Wayne 18 years ago. A very talented director & a great character. My thoughts are with his family & i’m sure everyone here in New York sends the same wishes.
Devastating news, Wayne was a very lovable character, and I’ll miss him. Sending lots of love to Belle and children. Maggie
Wayne,
You always made me laugh with your cheeky view on life and the wicked glint in your eye behind your glasses. It’s terrible, deeply moving news. My thoughts are with your family.
Jay Furby.
Its a tragedy here in Phuket where wayne was a great mate to many of us, and with Belle brought a wonderfull down to earth quality to our island life. He was coming down the hill towards the beach and was adjusting his helmet … somehow he lost control of his bike at the wrong time, wrong place. There will be a service organised here in Phuket and I will post details as soon as at hand.
Wayne was a true spirit who took each day with a passion, recently he worked really hard to win a Thai tourism campaign in bangkok with the TAT, and after at least half a dozen meetings in BKK, weeks of unpaid work and remade story boards about this wonderfull country that he fell in love with and called home, was pipped at the post by a lower bid…. in true wayne spirit he recounted how he called his team and let them know that if there were any long faces the next morning then there was no need for them to come back to work. full stop. Even in his toughest times he had a sparkle in his eye.
Wayne will be sadly missed and our hearts go out to Belle.
Nick and Maple Anthony, Surin Beach, Phuket
Terrific person, terrific director. Terrible news.
What I most loved about working with Wayne were the post, post production patch-it-up lunches at Fratelli Paradiso.
Following apologies for our equally appalling bouts of sulkiness we’d always raise a glass to a job beautifully done.
I will miss you my talented and lovable friend.
Tom Mac
I went to Art School with Wayne in the 70’s , worked together in our first design job and then we headed off to London. He was one of lifes true gentlemen and always welcomed you with “Hello dear” in that wonderful accent of his. He always gave 100% to every job with the most elaborate hand drawn storyboards.
My love & best wishes to Belle and his kids. Miss you bro.
Simon
I came across to Wayne’s wedding photos on my archive yesterday…. around 6pm…. Not knowing about the news yet. Words can not describe my feeling.
Wandee
Such a tragedy for a dear friend loved by so many. We are all thinking of belle and his wonderful children. Some of his closest will gather at the sheaf tonight for a drink in celebration of a wonderful life.
As all of the above. Very sad.
So sad that another wonderful, funny, and talented character has been lost from our industry.
Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to say a big thank you to you all for your kind words and more importantly for sharing your memories of Wayne.
My Dad was a brilliant man in many respects. He was funny, courageous, frustratingly stubborn and a terrible speller. He could rub you up the wrong way and then have you on your arse laughing deliriously in the space of 5 mins
It puts a smile to my face seeing how many people saw his amazing talents and appreciated him for them.
We are in the process of organising the funeral arrangements and when we have a firm date etc, I will post the details or you contact me on the following.

Once again thank you for your kind words and for giving a damn.

Very sad and tragic news. He was an amazing visual stylist and illustrator. My sincerest condolences to Belle and his family.
As a designer it was always a delight to work for this talented gentleman. His wicked sense of humour the bond in our friendship. Many many hours spent travelling and laughing and working passionately. My Deepest sympathy goes out to Belinda and his family.
What a tragic loss – one loved by so many all over the globe – your film family will miss that wicked sense of humour. With deepest sympathy from Jono and I and the shots crew.
Tragic news. I was speaking to Wayne a few weeks back about a project in Asia, he was full of enthusiasm and great ideas. We have lost one of our great directors.
Les Luxford
I’ve been fortunate in many ways to have the absolute pleasure of working on many jobs with Wayne both here and abroad. His cheeky sideways smile, the glint of his eye matched with his devilish humour, his uncurbed enthusiasm and talent for his work, his huge heart, means for me a very sad loss. “Cheers Darling” – I will miss you dearly my friend! My deepest sympathy to Belinda and his family.
Wayne, my friend – when I think of him I think of him laughing. I had the priviledge of producing for him and bigger priviledge of being his friend. We shared our friends, our homes and thoughts. While living in Italy he tried to learn Italian and all I can remember him saying was “si’ ” – but he was a genius with the camera, had a talent in making storyboards, knew had to save money when making a commercial. I miss you my friend and can’t believe you won’t be calling anymore. Angelo and I send our love to Belle and his kids. I am so lucky to have know you Wayne!!!
Corinne Burns Bruno
We have lost a brilliant talent and a top bloke. I did a shitload of work with Wayne, and it was always executed with panache. The bugger should have been working here, perhaps directing a motorcycle safety commercial for the TAC.
Monty Arnhold
Our thoughts and love to all Wayne’s family and many friends. His works speaks for itself.. but the man I saw when his ( and my) good friend Andy Pollard died, taught me a profound lesson in the meaning of strength and friendship. Andy and Wayne = scary heaven!
My heart goes out to his 5 children who will be left without ever being able to say goodbye
I haven’t seen Wayne for many years but time doesn’t diminish affection for real friends. His talent, enthusiasm and generosity of spirit were already showing at art school and in full swing by the time we were sharing a flat in London in the 70’s. This unexpected news was more painful than I would have imagined.
Paul Burgess
This is such terrible news. We would often meet for a beer here in Bangkok. He was a brilliant talent, I first worked with him when we both at Benton & Bowles in London about a hundred years ago. I will miss him. My condolences to Belinda and his children.
Totally unbelievable how suddenly someone can be lost. without the slightest warning. Wayne was just one of those guys who took life as he found it. When he put it in front of the camera, however, all of a sudden it became different and special. I have always had the greatest respect for Wayne as a craftsman ( and as a prolific breeder). Our industry will miss his sparkle; as for his family only god knows how they will carry on. A terrible and tragic loss.
Tim Gibbs
We are so sorry to have heard of this dreadful news this morning in Bangkok. He was such a good friend when we moved to Thailand and we would often catch up with Wayne when he was in transit from Phuket, he would truly put a spark in our day!
If anyone hears of any memorial in Phuket please be in touch with us. ingridtruelove@mac.com or nigel.kenneally@loweworldwide.com
Love to Bella and family xxx
Wayne joined my family 10 years ago when he fell in love and married my daughter Belinda. He was always the perfect gentleman with impeccable manners and a truly engaging personality. He would keep you entertained for hours with his interesting stories.
Although living abroad a lot of the time ,most recently in Phuket, he loved his family dearly and they were always in his thoughts.
I am sincerely grateful to him for the love and devotion he showered upon Belinda in their time together and the precious moments and adventures they shared.
I cannot express in words how deeply he will be missed by our family but he will always be remembered with great love and respect.
The Macdonald Family
Dear All, what a terrible blow and awful loss! Just got an email here this morning in Switzerland. Wayne and I were very fortunate to start his directing career and my producing career together all those years ago at Ibbetson Cherry and then out on our own at Gaffney Maule. We had so many laughs, fought a few battles, had a few tantrums and did some great work together over many years. My very best wishes to all family and friends at this very sad time. Best, Gayle Gaffney. x
We are all saddened to hear the shocking news Wayne was a wonderful chap and very talented. Our love and sympathy to Wayne’s family. Lizzy Nash, Karen Watson, Michael Cook @ The Feds
Such a shocking and sad news!!! OMG Wayne!! I was so looking forward to our next TVC together…
I remember you holding that lighter your wife gave you as a present.. and you once forgot it in the office and you called me late that night asking about it!!
RIP my friend!
Just heard the shocking news, am so so sad. I produced my first big number with Wayne and he made it such a pleasure. I will really miss him, what a wonderful spirit. My thoughts go to Belle and the children, and I will never forget the lovely Wayne Maule.
Wayne, you bastard, come back, you still owe me lunch!
A few of your really old friends raised their glasses to you here in Auckland tonight, mate. We will miss you so much. You will never be forgotten.
My thoughts are with everyone you loved and loved you in return.
John
Wayne shot my first commercial. The client made a (naff) suggestion to me and, being a junior, I thought I would dutifully pass it on to Wayne who said, surprisingly kindly, ‘Perhaps the client would like to shoot the fucking ad herself.’
I got the message.
one of a kind
This is a terrible loss, hard to believe… A great Director and a very close friend, it’s a great loss for the industry. He was coming to Beirut this week. We will really miss him.
Our hearts and prayers go out to him and his family.
Serge Oryan
Good bye Wayne…this is so unfair!
Simona
A very sad and tragic loss to a great and talented man! Condolences to his family! NIc Leggett and everyone @ Filmworks Dubai
Wayne my lovely friend…I love you to bits…you really were a true gentleman….I will really really miss you….I am looking out for Belle for you & will do my best to cook her a “little pasta”…but…it will never be as good as yours! XXX
I heard this shocking news last night from Peter Luxton. Wayne and I spent some time together in Indonesia a couple of years ago while he was sorting out his Thai visa. It was the last time I saw him. I cant remember how many jobs Wayne shot for me over the years, but it was a lot. A consummate professional, a pleasure to work with and a good friend.
Very, very tragic news.
a great eye, a rare talent, admired from afar by me ( sometimes begrudgingly, as in when he would win a job!) but mostly just admired…. a lot. My heart goes out to his family and children- his best work.
keep travelling Wayne.
To all of Wayne’s beautiful children and family, I was terribly sad to hear the news and I send all of my love to you. Isabelle knocked it on the head with her description of her Dad, one of Australia’s best directors and a damn good friend. Rest in peace Wayne- loving father, friend and funny bugger 🙂 x
Thanks again for the tip on the hotel Rome and for trying to help us get a great rate through your Italian reps… The view was magnificent… Good manners and charm are a bit scarce these days… Now they’re even scarcer…
My deepest sympathies to Belinda and family for their tragic and sudden loss.
As a fellow Aussie TVC Director I highly respected Wayne’s innate talent and business savvy. He was such a vivacious character too… We all had a lot of fun with the man – and that should never be forgotten.
Living far away from home now I love watching the “Where The Bloody Hell Are You” Australian Tourism TVC which plays before the feature presentation at the Australians in Film movie screenings held in Los Angeles. It never fails to stir cheers and applause from the proud and somewhat homesick ex-pat community, and I always say a quiet thank you to Wayne for directing it so beautifully with his classic touch of irreverence. Now I shall watch it with a slightly heavier heart.
His children should know… Wayne Maule was held in extremely high regard by us all.. be proud of your Dad and his legacy of classic Aussie storytelling which touched so many, many people through the plethora of brilliantly directed campaigns. My thoughts are with you during this time.
Vale Wayne.
Karen Borger
Wayne was one of the first directors I ever worked with and he taught me some of the most valuable lessons I’ve ever learnt in this often crazy industry. I reconnect with him just recently when I joined the team at Arithmetic and felt incredibly honored to be representing such an esteemed and accomplished adman. There is no denying his talent and he will forever be remembered for his cheeky sense of humor, passion, endless enthusiasm, professionalism and the reels of incredible work he leaves behind. This tragic accident is both shocking and heartbreaking and my thoughts are with his family and close friends at this sad sad time.
Rest in peace dear friend, we will all miss you terribly.
Bek Leech
I first worked with Wayne when he had a hair full of beautiful long curls. We had filming adventures in India and Italy and he was always wonderful to work . He had such a great eye and I always enjoyed getting his location shots because they were works of art. This is terribly sad news.
We were so shock to hear the news.
Our thoughts are with you Belle.
We will keep warmth memories of the good time in Sydney.
All our love from Toronto
Gavin & Jean-Luc
Deeply sorrow for the news. I had only one chance working with Wayne a couple years ago, but he did have an effect on me. I always admire his work and look forward to work more with him in the future. I guess that day will never come. My deeply regret to Belinda and Maule family.
What a sad loss. He always brought an interesting aspect to any job we worked on. He always had a smile when I saw him, always had something on the go.
A consumate professional. Yet another bloke I’ll miss bumping into and having a natter.
So long mate. paul
provill is so lucky to have worked with such a brilliant director. so long direc wayne,
and thank you for sharing us your expertise. our deepest condolences to wayne family.
Thank you for all of the wonderful messages that have been left for Belle and the family
There will be a ceremony on Saturday 31st October at Cherng Talay Temple, at 12pm followed by a wake at Taste on Surin Beach.\\

I am utterly shocked.
my thoughts and condolences go out to wayne’s family.
in the past few months I was lucky enough to speak to wayne almost every week about some project or other. these long conversations were always a joy and his enthusiasm, sense of humour, commitment and obvious love for the job always shone through.
i am deeply saddened by his loss, he will be missed.
Oh Wayne. Too many years between drinks. But boy, those were 15 of the most exciting years of my life that we worked the world together. Your talent was most enduring, and you deserved to live and work forever. Belle, my heart goes out to you, and to you Tizzy. And to the boys and Tallulah, he loved you so much.
We were greatly saddened to hear of Wayne’s untimely passing. Our thoughts go out to Bel and Wayne’s children. A great guy who will be greatly missed.
Cork-screw hair, warmest of smiles…it was a pleasure
to know you old friend and my heart goes out to all your
loved ones. God Bless.
In truth I should remember more about Wayne but as he, Bel and I spent most of our time together pissed and laughing hysterically at my bar he remains this wonderful blur. What I do remember clearly was how encouraging he was when I was redesigning the place. Wayne always did have the third eye and understood where I wanted to take things. In this business you buy some people a drink because you have to..I bought Wayne drinks because I wanted to. Oh and by the way Bel, as I write this, I’m wearing those crazy reading glasses he brought me back from Oz.
What terribly sad news. Wayne was always terrific to work with because he was so passionate – he’d fight tooth and nail for what he believed in – which made for some very fiery and memorable pre-production meetings. My thoughts go out to his family.
We’re poorer, heaven’s richer.
We’ll all miss you Wayne, but not as much as your beautiful Bella and kids.
Condolences to all.
Mark.
Our very sincerest condolences to Belle and Wayne’s children.
We are in absolute shock at this tragedy.
Wishing we could be with you at this time Belle.
Our thoughts are with you.
Wayne was an absolute gentlman.

Devastated to hear such tragic news. I will always remember Wayne’s wonderful, wicked and inspiring ways. Such a sad loss of a lovely man.
Wayne,
i think I might have firsted your very first commercial back in the early 80’s (it’s a long time ago) when you gracefully handled an arrogant DOP taking advantage of your inexperience. And then I produced a 20 day tourism shoot round the country for you in the late 90’s….we quoted a job together only a year or so ago….you were always totally professional and a pleasure to work with. Such a shame. Bon voyage,
Ian Iveson
What an amazing man. Such a sad tragic accident. Love to all of Waynes family. Belle Love You LOng Time. XXXXXXXOOOOOOO
All of us at Production International in London were very shocked and sad to hear the news. We worked on a couple of very memorable jobs with Wayne sharing good times with him. His passing is not only a great loss to this industry, but a great loss to this world. A very talented man taken to soon.
Very very very sad…Wayne used to be a regular at our office to use the internet when he and Belle moved to Phuket…he ALWAYS put a smile on my face just to see him coming in…he always had a good story to tell…smart …funny …talented…such a nice guy… he will be missed dearly….

It is so wonderful to read all the moving messages about my very talented brother. I am his little sister and though I didn’t get to spend as much time with him as I would have liked I have been in regular contact with him lately. He was a special person who truly inherited the work ethic of our hard working parents. Thank you Belle for making Wayne’s life so special for him he loved you deeply.
My thoughts are with my gorgeous nieces and nephews. Nana and I will be with you all in Sydney this coming week.
Genee
sad, sad, sad, Love to Belle and family. Thinking of you. xxx Petra
Hey Wayne, you were the first director I worked with and after tens years you were pretty much the last. You always had a way to bring me to tears, some through laughter others not… I loved your wicked humor and sensational eye for everything fabulous.
Love to you Belle and family.

So tragic. We spent a lot of time together on Qantas. I admired his passion and commitment, and considered him a true talent in the Industry. It was a beautiful thing to see the way our sometimes sparky one interacted with the children on location, taking the time to sit and have one on one chats, show them the video split, enthuse them prior to the beautiful performances he would tap into. His love for his children and Bel were the true priority of his life, one he worked hard on getting the most out of. My sincere and heartfelt condolences to the gorgeous Bel and his family. Tragic.
Corrine
Condolences to the family on Waynes passing. Now Havoc has Wayne to take him for those long walks they both loved. Bye mate.
Shocked to read of this sad news in the Sydney papers. Love to Belle
Margaret Lee (Josh’s ma)
Dear Wayne. My Award School teacher and first boss at JWT Sydney in 1984. You pulled me out of your Award class and gave me my first job as a copywriter. Those early days are etched deeply in my mind, you rushing down the hall to some client meeting, closely pursued by Havoc, while I toiled away on some bloody Kellogg’s campaign. Always an adventurer and an inspiration. Mara
So sad to hear of Wayne’s death, I worked with him briefly on the Qantas commercial in London, it was an unforgettable and stimulating experience, not only leaving me with me some very entertaining memories but also he made me look at London with new eyes and I will lnever look at the curve of Regent Street without thinking of Wayne.! He encouraged us to make the difficult possible and his vision was distinctive and memorable. I would like to extend great sympathy to his family at this sad time as their loss is immense and hard to contemplate.
Helen (Hadfield)

Wayne Maule was my step father. He was married my Mum Magie Maule his first wife when he was based in England. He then moved to Oz with Mum,Benji and Isabelle. I was so sorry to hear of this terrible News. Wayne was a huge figure in my life. He was very kind, generous and took a great interest in raising me as if I was his own child. He was a larger than life person who was always very ambitious. His career really took off in Oz and he achieved his ultimate gaol of directing commercials. He has been taken from us all far to soon. Wayne loved people, cars and motorbikes, good food (he was an excellent cook) and fine wine. He was always very sociable and funny. He had a huge network of friends and colleagues from all over the world. I know he will be sadly missed – I am thinking of his family at this difficult time. I will be in Oz soon to give my brother and sister big hugs soon. This all just so so sad.
We are deeply saddened to have learned of Wayne’s tragic and untimely death. We will never forget the great times together in Rome. Wayne was a truly wonderful character – a one of a kind – and our hearts go out to Belle, Isabelle, and the rest of the family.
Though I never met Wayne my husband Denis grew up with him as neighbours in Taumarunui, heart of the King Country, North Island, New Zealand. Both born there, the same age & apparently the best of mates & also typical boys with plenty of mischief happening. A story Waynes mum told me was when there was a new house being built down the road & the boys poked holes in the building paper so they could fire things at each other. Of course, they were made to return & apologise to the builder!! There were family holidays spent together over the years & the boys parents remained good friends. Unfortunately Denis & Wayne didn’t keep in touch after the Maules moved away but we would hear snippets of news about Wayne. These tributes have been wonderful to read. We have learn’t a lot more about Wayne & his acheivements. Quite remarkable actually – a true talent & a wonderful person who loved his family. A very sad loss indeed. Our thoughts are with his family.
Thinking of you today Bel.
One year goes so quick.
It’s coming on a year and half now. It’s taken me this long to read the kind words about my father again. Now in the light of a less mournful day.I wish to say THANK YOU!
There is a silly video of him on you tube posted by Ross Wallace. I watch it frequently to remember the way his faces moves and his ever flippant sense of humour.
For those of you who miss those moments type in Wayne Maule into You Tube. You’ll find him.
Thanks Ross….

I ONLY LEARNT OF WAYNE’S PASSING A YEAR OR SO AGO. BUT ITS NOT TOO LATE TO PAY TRIBUTE TO AN
AMAZING TALENT AND WONDERFULLY INSPIRING PERSON. WAYNE WAS NEARLY ALWAYS ON MY LIST OF DIRECTORS TO BID FOR A JOB AND MORE OFTEN THAN NOT HE WON THE BID, COST WAS NEVER A DECIDING FACTOR, ONLY TALENT. AND WAYNE SURE HAD LOTS OF THAT.
