Tonic Launches in Sydney… The Sound of Renewal
A new wave of creativity is hitting Pyrmont with the launch of Studiotonic – an independent music and sound studio founded by Simon Lister. Built on optimism, artistry, and authenticity, Tonic brings together a loyal team of collaborators to redefine the sound of Australian storytelling.
An Indie Soundhouse Built on Loyalty
There’s a new sound in Sydney, and it’s one that’s all heart.
Studiotonic, or simply Tonic, has officially launched in Pyrmont, bringing a renewed sense of optimism, artistry, and authenticity to the creative industry. Founded by Simon Lister, the independent music and sound studio is built on community, creative freedom, and an unwavering passion for sonic storytelling.
After years with Squeak E Clean Studios and collaborations across global markets, Simon saw an opportunity to refocus his energy on home soil.
“What gives me joy is doing what I love with people I love working with,” says Simon. “Creating, mentoring, and building a space where we can all creatively thrive, that’s what Tonic is about.”
Tonic is small, independent, and fiercely proud of it. A startup built on loyalty, this is a team that chose to take the leap together – no small thing in an industry where movement is constant.
“The fact that the whole team came with me means everything,” says Simon. “Everyone has put their heart into this. We’re building Tonic like it’s our own, because it is. We’re small, agile, and driven. That’s the beauty of being a startup. Everyone is invested, everyone’s all in. The energy is electric.”
This spirit of togetherness runs through every project. Tonic’s foundation is community, creativity, and connection, not hierarchy. Every voice matters, every idea gets space, and every success is shared.
The Tonic Team: People with Presence
The people behind Tonic are what make it truly special – a fusion of skill, passion and experience that draws clients in and will keep them coming back.
Simon Lister – Owner & Executive Creative Director
An award-winning creative and sonic storyteller, Simon (pictured above) has spent decades blending music, sound, and emotion for global campaigns and documentaries. He’s an adventurer at heart, photographer, director, and philanthropist, and that sense of curiosity and purpose fuels Tonic’s energy.
“Simon brings a mix of grit and generosity that inspires everyone around him,” says Chief Executive Producer Emma Duncan. “He’s the heart of this place.”
Emma Duncan – Chief Executive Producer
With over a decade in sound post-production and working along Lister, Duncan brings structure, precision, and heart to Tonic’s workflow, with an infectious enthusiasm that makes every project a joy for clients and colleagues alike. Returning from maternity leave in early 2026, Duncan represents Tonic’s commitment to balance, proof that great leadership can coexist with family and flexibility. Until then, executive producer Laura-Leigh Smith is seamlessly overseeing post in her place.
“Emma brings passion, creativity, and heart to everything she does,” says Simon. “Her professionalism and vitality animate the studio, and clients instantly connect with her warmth and energy.”
Cam Milne – Creative Director
Milne (above) is the studio’s sonic craftsman — an alchemist of detail and atmosphere. With a deep understanding of how sound drives narrative, his work transforms briefs into experiences. He’s also a mentor to emerging sound designers, reflecting Tonic’s culture of growth. Having worked alongside the industry’s leading talent for over a decade, Milne has built lasting creative relationships and is always on the look out to forge new ones.
“Cam doesn’t just design sound,” says Simon. “He designs feeling. He loves bringing clients along on the creative journey – elevating their vision and creating something exceptional together.”
Laura-Leigh Smith – Executive Producer
After six years in London as EP at the acclaimed String and Tins, Smith (above) returned to Australia bringing a wealth of international experience. She has produced sound and music for some of the world’s most renowned agencies and brands, combining expertise and a passion for sound with her warm, approachable and collaborative spirit. An accomplished singer with an exceptional ear, Smith’s meticulous craft and musicality shine through in every project.
“Laura-Leigh sets the tone,” says Milne. “She’s the person who keeps everything on track – our projects, our people, our purpose – and makes the whole process feel effortless for our clients.”
Emma Hoy – Executive Music Director
A gifted producer/recording artist and musical storyteller, Hoy has an instinct for capturing emotion in melody. Her work spans advertising, film, and installation, and she’s known for crafting scores that feel lived in — authentic, textured, and human.
“Emma and I have known each other for over 20 years,” says Simon. “Her musicality is extraordinary, and I admire her both as a person and as a producer/music director. She’s multi-talented, bringing artistry, intelligence, and empathy to every project. I’m stoked to be working with her again.”
Says Hoy: “Joining the Tonic team feels like a full-circle moment. I started in the industry at 19 as Simon’s studio assistant, later helping grow Nylon Studios in Sydney — now I’m thrilled to bring my journey and my love for big, collaborative creative projects to Tonic.”
Jackson Lister – Sound Designer
Representing the next generation, Jackson Lister (above) blends classical training with a modern, experimental edge. He brings youthful energy and curiosity to the studio, unafraid to push creative boundaries. His fingerprints are on Tonic’s new identity too: part of the design team, part of the sound, all heart. From recording with artists from all around the world, to fine-tuning global ad campaigns, Jackson’s calm demeanour keeps him grounded in every project.
Tonic: Crafted with Spirit
Set in Pyrmont’s creative hub, Tonic isn’t just a studio – it’s a gathering space for ideas, workshops, and live sessions designed to connect the advertising, music, and creative communities. The studio’s brand identity is a family affair, shaped by Simon’s daughter Ella (3D designer) and son Jordan (Art Director), in collaboration with Design Army.
Their focus is now firmly local — deepening relationships with Australian agencies, brands, and artists, and giving back to the creative community that shaped them.
“We’re building something that reflects who we are, not just as creators, but as people. We value human connection and fostering genuine relationships. That’s what we want our clients to feel when they walk through the door.”
As an independent studio, Tonic moves with instinct, not trend – championing local talent and shaping a new era of Australian sound.
“We’re small, agile, and all in,” says Simon. “Tonic is about creative renewal — real people, real sound, and real connection.”
Together, under the banner of Studiotonic, the team’s ready to explore fresh ideas, nurture local talent, and redefine what’s possible within the industry.
Welcome to Tonic — the sound of renewal.
