Tipton confirmed for Mojo Melbourne CD gig
Publicis Mojo Chairman Graeme Wills has confirmed that Franklin Tipton will take up the creative director position at Publicis Mojo, Melbourne, in early 2010 – as tipped by CB back in early October.
Tipton leaves his post at Goodby Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco (2009 Cannes Digital Agency of the Year) as executive creative director on the Sprint and Zynga business, with a slew of creative awards. His primary client, telco giant Sprint, is the largest integrated advertising account in the USA, with annual media billings of between US$ 900m and $1.3bn.
Graeme Wills, who lured Craig Davis, formerly JWT worldwide creative director, to Mojo in June, said that Tipton’s appointment is further testament to the breadth of opportunity that Mojo offers as a creator and exporter of world class work. “We welcome Franklin and eagerly anticipate his contribution to our dynamic and growing team,” he said.
A wicked writer, Tipton crafted the brand voices of BMW’s Mini, Virgin Atlantic Airways, and
Methodhome cleaning products during three years at Crispin Porter + Bogusky,Miami. He wrote the campaign that won the Citibank account for Fallon,Minneapolis, and spent four years in the UK helping build Mother,London, with his wife, Libby. He began his career working forblockbuster author James Patterson.
“I’m intrigued to seewhat can be built in and from Australia,” said Tipton. “I like to pushout the boundaries; if there was ever a time for zero geography, thisis it. The Internet has not just flattened the earth and culture, butcompletely removed the tyranny of distance. Ideas can get to the otherside of the globe in less than a quarter second.
“Mojo isproving that you can work in the world from pretty much anywhere;they’re doing it, and that’s what I plan to do too.”
As wellas joining Craig Davis (CCO and co-chairman), Micah Walker (ECD,Sydney), and their teams in collaborating on Mojo’s burgeoning globalbriefs, Tipton will have ample opportunity in Melbourne to heap up morecreative successes for iconic Australian brands such as Cadbury, NestlePeters and Tourism Victoria, and for international brands like Nike andHertz.
“Franklin is a forward-thinking creative leader whowill accelerate innovation at Mojo and help set the bar for theAustralian industry,” said Davis. “Naturally, we’re excited he’s chosenus as his next adventure.”

Sure he’s talented.
Sure the agency is amazing.
But.
So hating this style of PR.
Gotta be a new way.
Just gotta be!
Please!
Don’t we have any local talent good enough?
another good win for mojo
What really bothers me are Craig Davis’ contradictions. On one hand, he takes on Sir Martin Sorrell about the whole ‘Australia is a backwater’ comment by reaffirming his commitment to this country based on the premise that there’s an incredible amount of talent in here that can actually be exported. Then he goes out and hires an overseas Creative Director for the Melbourne office. Where do you really stand Craig? Is not just about blog comments, speeches at conferences or media interviews. Actions speak louder than words and at the moment all we are getting from you is meaningless words.
That´s a decent name. FRANKLIN TIPTON. Sounds like a tobacco tycoon from Virginia with a massive gun collection and a no-nonsense attitude. FRANKLIN TIPTON.
Very true Mark. Although I’m sure this guy is extremely talented, where was the next Aussie up & comer, or, gasp, even a young guy like they used to do in the good old days.
