The Hallway offers creative internship to the student that tops Rocky Ranallo and Matt Smith’s inaugural Western Sydney Ad School
The Hallway ECD and partner Simon Lee has announced today that The Hallway is offering a three month creative internship to the top student of the inaugural Western Sydney Ad School.
Western Sydney Ad School is the brainchild of Australian advertising legends Rocky Ranallo (right) and Matt Smith (centre). Based in Parramatta, the school’s mission is to offer an advertising course that’s affordable and more accessible to creative people who wouldn’t normally consider an advertising career. The first twelve week semester launches later this month.
Says Ranallo: “I just think there’s a whole lot of good talent out west that the industry is missing out on because of the high cost of most advertising schools. If you come from the Eastern Suburbs or have a dad or mum in the business you get a leg up. I want to give those disadvantaged kids a chance to build a book of ads so they can get a job. Simple as that.”
Says Smith: “If the industry is let down by anything it’s probably the lack of diverse thinking. Different talent with different ideas can only be a bonus for an industry that thrives on original thought.”
Interning at The Hallway from early February 2020, the winning Western Sydney Ad School student will gain first hand experience of the inner workings of the agency, with a particular focus on the creative department – shadowing creatives as they go about their work.
Says Lee (left): “When we heard what Rocky and Matt are doing, we jumped at the chance to get involved. I love advertising for being an industry that enables creative people to earn a living doing what we love. And I’m stoked to be able to help open the door to talented and ambitious people for who this wonderful path might otherwise not be an option.”
Adds Ranallo: “We are incredibly grateful to The Hallway for offering this internship. It’s such a great thing for them to do and will inspire the students to work harder for that spot.”

Nice work guys. Well done to the three of you.
If you’re going to take your pick of the top students, put some actual skin in the game.
or at least pay them for the internship.
Great idea Gents!
I don’t think everyone who grows up out west considers themselves “disadvantaged”. The project is good but the language is eastern suburbs snobbery at its best.
Absolutely agree, how condescending.
Commendable efforts to get more people who don’t live in Surry Hills into advertising, but their tagline is a little patronising of the West. Why not have something like ‘Great ideas have no address”?

I want to see the location. Is it really a cool old, statuesque palladium? If so, I’m going back to school. Or are you in a demountable where everyone takes their shirt off during class because of the ‘disadvantage west’s’ incredible sub-continental summer time equatorial heat?

If you’re going to be a smartarts, get your speling rihgt.
The line is: Ideas can come from anywhere.
It’s on the poster.
‘Love this – it’s a wonderful opportunity for someone to grab with both hands. Good on you.
Only this blog would criticise efforts to publicise genuine good will, effort and energy towards making a difference.
Get behind it people!
Aussie adland stalwarts giving something back.
They’ll be paid, right? It’s a paid internship yeah? Please tell me these humans will get some reimbursement…
Love the initiative, but ‘internship’ has the whiff of ‘no pay’ about it.
Please tell us the lucky winner will be paid [and at a fair rate for the period of the internship] and we’ll applaud the entire initiative even louder.
Does that mean the agencies are going to move to Blacktown? Gettin’ tired of starin’ at sun.
Good on you guys, lovely idea.I’me sure you’ll find gold out west.
It’s tough out there I know someone who got a job and there were over 100 applicants.Maybe part of the course could be how to get a job when you’ve finished.Good luck boys.
Congrats guys.
Absolutely love this. Nice work Matt n Rocky! Yiew
