The Glue Society and Revolver’s first creative collaboration: A controversial new clip for Lithuanian Supergroup, Metal On Metal
In a unique cross-cultural collaboration, independent creative collective The Glue Society, Sydney has conceived and directed the latest music video for Lithuania’s slaughterhouse music act, Metal On Metal.
The band, who are signed with legendary Skint Records in the UK, originate from Vilnius, Lithuania and since 2005 have been winning awards for their provocative and energetic DJ performances. For their latest single ‘Bastard’, they challenged The Glue Society to write and direct a high end clip, which lived up to the provocative title.
Of the first collaborative project with Revolver, Glue Societydirector, Matt Devine – who also filmed the recent 42 Below art filmproject – says: “I reckon the spot is bastard-ish enough. The guys gaveus the ultimate gift – absolute creative freedom to interpret theirmusic. In the end what has happened is the film lifts the track and thetrack lifts the film – so we reckon it’s been a great long-distancemarriage.”
For Devine, the film, which turns table tennis into atwisted blood sport for a wealthy elite, also marks a revival in thevideo clip genre. “YouTube is every bit the new MTV. So recordcompanies are quickly gaining a new-found interest in higher qualityand more experimental video clips. It’s good news for film-makers andmusicians alike.”

Almost. That’s what I think after watching this – almost. But it just falls short – especially when you had license to do whatever you wanted.
that was fucking cool.
Fucking awesome boys! Nicely directed Mr Divine.
That’s pretty cool. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
beautifully directed but utterly predictable finish. bit of a letdown.
why move?
Poor Taste!
Pleix do this much better. Wish there was a fast forward button on Viemo…. Too long and indulgent for most.
Ham and Cheese
I have been making Music clips since the early 80s and I beg to differ. I find the clip un-excitng, obvious, boring and nothing to do with the music. It does not capture the feel of the track leaving the music and concept disjointed. Is it just an excersise in sensationlism? I find the coverage standard and the cinematography and editing pedestian- but that is just my taste. What I find really annoying is the copy by?- is it a publicist? Sounds like it. Are you an advertising agency? ” .. marks a revival in the video clip genre..:??!! you gotta be kidding. And where have you been for the past few years?- YouTube has been functioning a the new MTV for years. Small record companies have long used YouTube, even the majors have long used it. After all its free to post and better reaches targeted audiences. “…new-found interest in higher quality and more experimental video clips..” Are you implying that Youtube does not have these quality in clips posted before? Where have you been? Its been there for years and I wouldn’t dare say this clip is experimental! Mr Divine YOU MUST BE SO EMBARRASSED BY THIS SPIN. If not, you need some reality and humility. One thing though- I wouldn’t mind playing a bit of ping pong with the two Asians.
Please, after about the fourth volley of the prop hand grenade, is anybody still watching? Really? The agonizing faces of the bourgeoisie?
The track lifts the film, and the film lifts the track? Someone lift the shovel and help get this out of here.
For a comparison, put this work up against Chris Cunningham’s Aphex Twin clip for “Windowlicker”
Nuff said.
Harsh guys. It’s just a fucking music video. Not my taste, but it’s not terrible.
It was better when it was called Kelly Watch the Stars.
Great guys, love to have seen it end up on the fat guy with tongue’s lap.
Nice production values but it’s a very “year 12” visual arts idea. Typical adverstising dudes looks great but has no substance.
Why was the handle still on the grenade after she pulled the pin/let go of it?
It’s not hard to research and stops the grenade looking like a prop.
Give it rest you twats.
It’s fucking great. Well done.
love it.
I thought it was fresh. Fuck all ya’ll.
I was waiting for one of the girls to lob the grenade over the fence and nuke the audience – so I was happily surprised when one of out players gets fragged instead.
Well done.
I hate this site – it’s such an embarrassment to our industry when people tread on other people’s efforts to entertain you people.
I want to love it. Good elements in there. Yeah, it throws back to the Air clip and promises gory entertainment from early on but the way it’s structured leaves it too long to wait between the beginning and what becomes an anti-climax.
They had absolute creative freedom, so decided to do something similar to the famous Nike poster (Pete Sampras serving a hand grenade instead of a tennis ball).
It won loads of awards – don’t tell me you haven’t seen it.
Um, Kelly watch the stars is a pretty well known clip… Why copy something but give it less context, less interest, less cool factor? Hmmm.
pity that so much time and effort was put into such a lousy music track.
feel sorry for the editor,i should imagine that having to listen to the track over and over could seriously damage your health.
I think the link to Air video is pretty weak. Yes there are two girls playing ping pong in front of a crowd but that happens at the olympics too. I love how the kooks on here analyze the heck out of it like it’s a scam ad or something. So predictable.
Nice work anyway it’s a ripper of a video. I’d kill to do a music video, looks like fun.
Cool to see something other than an ad posted on here.
I DO,
I DO SO LIKE GREEN EGGS AND HAM
Slow motion female table tennis in a music video is a pretty strong link.
As controversial as this gem from 1998: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwC1swvlBPs
I actually find the Air video way less entertaining than this one. This is a really well directed video, congrats.
Has anyone ever posted anything on here that some anonymous gobshite hasn’t found some arguable youtube evidence that it was rip off?
The question I ask is why couldn’t the clip be pushed a little harder?? It needed a build to the structure, as we the audience knew that the grenade was going to blow up so i feel the images needed to be played on the build of the track to make it more intense toward the end, rather it was just the same speed, same edit, same cutaways all the way through.
I wanted to really like it and at the start when the track kicked in and the characters walked out in slow motion I thought, here we go – this is going to have drive…but it didn’t and therefore it made the ending predictable and somewhat anti climatic.
12:27 It was fresh alright . . . and steaming. The fact that you were ‘happily surprised’ by that outcome is the ’embarrassment to our industry’, that and the fact that you include yourself by calling it ‘our industry’ with opinions like the one you;ve expressed. This blog site allows those with an honest critical eye to tell the candid truth about the work that’s out there, as an antidote to the bleating sheep proclaiming whatever comes along as ‘fresh’ because they have absolutely no idea of the truly innovative work that’s being created around the world. The really troubling thing about your comment, and those of a few others is your inability to tell the difference.
I liked the idea but not enough happening for me, especially in relation to the music. You could have so much more happening. When the crowd came to their feet, I thought they were going to storm the floor or something. Great slow mo shots though. Table tennis can be a beautiful game to watch.
I actually know Jonathon Kneebone really well, really, really really well man, really well man. Well, I ah, emailed him a couple of times…
Anyway I thought this was r-r-r-really good, really good man, really good.
I thought the heaving breasts on the Eurasias’ were very watchable.
Was there music too?
As usual the bell-ends come out to slag off people who who are actually making good shit.
Matt, nice work on the direction. Sent it round the office and loads of people digged it.
keep rocking
David
Is this not the opening scene from Dont Mess with the Zohan?
