The Cowboys’ Matt Sterne scores big with debut film ‘Ghost Town Cricket’ – now streaming
Matt Sterne, Creative Partner and Co-Founder of The Cowboys agency, has wrapped up a successful debut on the international film festival circuit with his first non-branded documentary, Ghost Town Cricket – now streaming online.
What began as a self-funded side project – born from a scroll through Instagram during COVID lockdown – has quietly grown into a festival favourite. The film captures the most unusual annual cricket match that brings a remote outback ghost town back to life for one day each year. Simple in its approach, heartfelt in its delivery, Ghost Town Cricket is a story about community, resilience, and how the love of a game can keep a place – and its memories alive.
The film has earned official selections at 10 festivals across Australia, Europe, India and the UK picking up several awards along the way, including Film of the Festival, multiple Best Documentary, Best Documentary Director, and Best First-Time Director.
“There’s something hypnotic about seeing people do something completely out of place – like a full-on cricket match in the middle of the outback. It just shouldn’t exist, and yet it does. The more I leaned in, the more emotional it became. There’s soul behind the randomness, and that’s what made me want to tell the story.”
The experience has sparked a deeper focus on original documentary storytelling for Sterne, who now balances independent work with in-house directing at The Cowboys.
