TALBOT INVITES TOP LINE-UP TO JUDGE AWARD IN SEPTEMBER
AWARD are pleased to announce the salubrious panel of judges and the best Call for Entry result in seven years.
Joining the auspicious line-up of judges from Asia, New Zealand and Australia AWARD welcomes Chris Garbutt, TBWA\Paris and Leo Premutico, Saatchi & Saatchi New York.
Representation from Asia is at an all time high, including Prangthip Pradipong, Creative Juice\G1 Bangkok, Sheung Yan Lo, JWT Shanghai,

Says Toby Talbot (pictured), ECD DDB New Zealand and Chairman of Judges: “Once more, the finest minds in our business will descend on Sydney like a plague of erudite locusts for two weeks of intense judging. It will be fun. It always is. But this year promises to be really tough too. AWARD is now big enough to showcase some of the very best work in the world. It’s not a small, parochial show. It is, after all, the only show that truly represents Australia, New Zealand and Asia. To get in the book should be an honour. To win metal, you will have had to have done something world class. Last year was a record year for Australia at Cannes. This year, the Kiwis shone. Asia had another strong year. We must be doing something right. Let’s hope this year’s AWARD reflects this very positive trend “.
AWARD Judging will be held in Sydney, September 24th until October 5th ; 59 Judges will fly in from interstate and overseas, making a total of 95 who will decide the finalists and winners, the latter heralded at the AWARD Presentation Evening November 30th at CarriageWorks, Eveliegh Railyards Sydney.
AWARD Entry numbers are at a seven year high, with a surge in interactive and TV Craft entries, the latter a positive reflection in the wake of the important merger of the KODAK Gongs and AWARD earlier this year.

Here’s a thought: Why not for the so-called ‘none of the above’ category get creative people from other industries to judge it? To me, there is something circular about having advertising people judging ideas that are not advertising. It would be cool to get a regional film director like, say, Peter Jackson and other creative leaders to assess if the ideas we reckon are super-shit-hot are quite as super-shit-hot as we reckon.
Toby’s mates allright. And there’s a DDB rep in every possible category – including direct, ‘cos Wayne Pick is about to join DDB in NZ.

Hang on a minute. Nine jurors from BBDO, 7 from Publicis Mojo, 6 from Saatchi and I count 4 from DDB. Even if Wayne Pick is going to DDB that’s 5. Can’t you guys count? Or maybe you’re not happy you’re not on a jury? The latter I reckon.
It’s a very balanced jury. Almost all top creative networks are represented, which has been lacking some years. The only networks I can think of (with some sort of creative profile) that did not get a guernsey are Euro and Grey.
I think the count of 7 for DDB came about by a misinformed blogger including two jury chairmen (Toby Talbot and Ben O’Brien), both of whom won’t be judging. With 5 for the DDB network (including Wayne Pick), it’s not excessive compared to rivals BBDO (9), Saatchi (6) and Publcis Mojo (7). Overall, a very balance jury.
It’s not that it’s not balanced or the people aren’t talented, it’s just the SAME people OVER and OVER again.

Not every good agency is represented.I remember Patts Melb winning a boot load last year, including gold & agency of the year.Can’t see one actual judge on any panel from them this year.Weird.
7:13, Ant ‘Big ad’ Keogh, now at Clems, is a judge, one of the gang that won last year and year before.
I count a few from the GPYR Melbourne of yesteryear, Grant Rutherford, Ant Keogh, Richard Muntz and Josh Stephens.That doesn’t count Paul Catmur who actually currently works at GPYR.So I reckon an agency that blitzed them all last year is pretty well represented, though I wouldn’t think you’d have to worry about them gang voting for the Y&R network. Somehow I just can’t see it happening.If you had James Mcgrath and Ben Coulson along they could practically have a reunion.For the organisers, I say it’s a pretty good jury (no I’m not on it) if you bring in new blood you get the “Who the fuck is that?” bullshit and if you get the big names you get “Same tired old fuckers!” comments.Chin up ol chaps and get back to writing some fucken ads. There hasn’t really been anything on here of late thats going to rock the Cannes boat so far.
