Santa tries to decipher Kiwi kids’ Christmas requests in new spot for Air NZ via Host/Havas
Air New Zealand has poked fun at the Kiwi accent with a heart-warming new video via Host/Havas out today of Santa taking calls from Kiwi kids keen to tell him what they want under the tree this Christmas.
‘A Very Merry Mistake’ shows Santa trying to decipher a number of unusual requests from New Zealand children which have been lost in translation including everything from biscuitballs (basketballs) and puggy banks (piggy banks) to bug screen TVs (big screen TVs) and a book of magic trucks (tricks).
In the clip, Santa’s helpers – Air New Zealand’s Cabin Crew – come to the big man’s aid providing some much-needed translation skills.
Air New Zealand chief marketing and customer officer Mike Tod says the airline wanted to celebrate the festive season in a uniquely New Zealand way.
Says Tod: “While it’s no secret the Kiwi accent has been misunderstood at times, it’s also a signature part of our service. In fact, for many Kiwis, being welcomed onboard an Air New Zealand flight by crew after being offshore for some time makes them feel instantly back at home.
“We wanted to celebrate the festive season and the Kiwi accent in a humorous and uniquely Air New Zealand way.”
Says Miriam Meyerhoff, professor of linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington: “New Zealand English has had 150 years to go native. In that time, the short vowels have wandered and that’s what makes it sound so distinctive – as the flight attendant in the video explains. It’s great to see Kiwis owning this distinctiveness and embracing it for comic effect.”
Air New Zealand will be giving away some of Santa’s mis-made toys shown in the video via its social media channels in December while those in New Zealand who book a flight on the Air New Zealand website between 4 and 22 December or via their travel agent can enter the draw to win $10,000 Airpoints Dollars.

I thunk they cocked this one up.
Loved it. Scottish elf stole the show.
You really are an egg
Just missed the mark. Comedy is all off. Like the creative but eh.
Nice idea, but comic timing seems all off.
I thought this was bloody great. Love it. Well done.
@yeah nah and tock, grow up you cowards. You could set your watch to the comic timing it’s that good.
Bloody loved it Jack and Hadleigh. So good.
At least its not another pale impersonation of what Taika Waititi does a whole lot better.
Sorry falls flat for me……I really want to like it but it misses comedically, feels like a wasted opportunity. Looks great though.
So close to being great but is only just getting to good.
Didn’t need to see the toys, gets boring as it drags on..
Would have been better as a spot and then content assets to get deeper in, maybe that will come, but seeing as they ran a 3min spot on Facebook. Doubtful.
Love it.
Best of the Christmas lot. Easily. Well done.
Funny as! And all over my facebook by non industry friends already.
So jealous haters hate! Job done. Its a winner.
Good ad, well done. I see the washed up creatives that always have an excuse for why they’ve never done anything good are out in good form.
Nice one, congrats to all involved. Lots of charm, on brand and the product extensions are awesome!
Ignore the wannabe grinches.
Love it – Well done all. Two thumbs up.
Loved this! Kiwis can do no wrong..
Comic timing seemed bang on for me
Don’t listen to all the likers, haters.
These Pollyanna’s wouldn’t know bad work if it landed on their desk and punched them in the nose with a mixed metaphor. Just remember, one bad apple spoils the broth, so keep those finely tuned ‘yeah nah’ detectors locked in to ‘nah’.
Meanwhile, for what it’s worth, this had some killer gags. New beard? Classic. An amazing premise and a great middle. Just like Santa.
CHOICE!
Hello Edam. Love this so much. The whole office must have watched this ten times today and had a good laugh.
Uts a REALLY old gag ay! Funny AF tin years ago ay. Nek time!
Saw this on Sunrise this morning then heard people talking about it on the radio. Wish I had clients who would buy work like this. Credit where credit is due. Good stuff.
heaps good Jack ‘n Had!
You can just tell that @yeah nah and @close but no cigar are the guys everyone avoids at the Christmas party.
