Hungry Talks is a student run talk show providing inspiration for curious minds alongside industry guests. Each week the Hungry Talks team deep dives into the world of advertising AI, Barbie (obviously), strategy, and production, and try to answer the eternal young creative’s conundrum: have we sold our souls to the capitalist dream?

Hungry Talks is run by a team of 6 advertising students, 20 Cert IV screen and media students, and 2 supervisors, John Dingeldei and Chris Paterson. Each year, a new team of third-year advertising students host the show. The 2023 team includes their two hosts Charlie Borracci and Jaia Guildford-Carey, writer Luca Battaglia, editor Simone Petrovski, social media manager Steph Leong and creative producer Chelsea Addison. All six students are final year advertising majors who will soon be graduating and participating in RMIT Pitch Night on Tuesday October 17th.

Co-hosts Charlie Borracci and Jaia-Guildford-Carey perform in front of a live studio audience each week, with a series of pre-recorded segments, and live interviews with industry guests. To finish off each episode, the team presents the student viewers with a weekly Quick Brief, a concise AWARD school-inspired creative brief to practice their craft.

Says Addison: “We’ve been incredibly lucky to have 7 internships and/or mentor sessions offered as incentives to the quick briefs. So far, Joe Whybin has won a 1:1 with Howatson + Company managing partner Bec Robertson and Laura Rositano has won a 1 week internship at Little Rocket.”

The 2023 team have been lucky enough to host a total of 67 guests this season. In Episode 1, they chatted with Erin Beers and Zoe Blochlinger from Thinkerbell. In the following weeks, they spoke to Tyler Hamilton from Deloitte Digital and Kelly Ann Smith RMIT Digital Learning Resource Specialist, Bec Robertson and Sasha Smith from Howatson + Company, Belle Kwan from CultureVerse, John Burgess and Kelsey Dubar from Little Rocket, Annie Little and Liam Jenkins from The Royals, Shani Moon and Alanna Caluya from ICYMI Collective, Maddie Fricker, Charlie Kuster and Meesha Laboo from VMLY&R, David Fanner from Ogilvy Change, and Sarannie Tong, Shaun Topp, Corrine Teng and Raz Adams 2023 D&AD Graphite Pencil Winners. By Episode 7, the Hungry Talks team really found their groove with the show and were fortunate enough to host Jess Lilley and Amy Hollier from The Open Arms, Nat Taylor and Beth Malcher from Poppet Content, professor Christine Parker from the ADM+S Centre, artist Anthony Breslin, Jes Harris from The Jacky Winter Group, Rachael Webb from DataSauce, Theresa Nguyen from ReflexGroup, and comedian and content creator Samantha Andrew.

Says Addison: “The show quickly became something I didn’t expect it to be. We had a great first episode and from there – our team of crew began to grow, and agencies started reaching out to us. 67 guests and 9 episodes later I am so chuffed with what we’ve been able to create. All 28 of us!”

Says Battaglia: “Once I reached the 20,000-word mark, I looked back at the series and contemplated how useful the project was in gaining insight and experience. I also reflected on the collaborations with generous industry experts, and the successful execution of our vision, and how these will help me grow my career.”

Says Guildford-Carey: “I am so proud of what we have achieved this year with the show. The media team is just fantastic and I love the Hungry Talks team. It has been really fun hosting Hungry Talks and meeting all the great industry guests… Watch this space we are all going places… Roll It!”

Says Borracci: “Like some of the best things, I can say with certainty I will miss being apart of the Hungry Talks Team. It has been a privilege to host the 9 episodes that made up the 2023 season. Each week I looked forward to dressing up, working with the Ad and Media crew, and of course interviewing some incredibly insightful people. I hope to work in a similar role one day, but for now thank you and goodnight!”

Says Petrovski: “As I pressed export on the final video package for the show, I realised that I would miss the pressure of producing flawless video packages with hard deadlines. My favourite part of doing my role has always been the reactions from my team, audience members and guests. I would encourage anyone who enjoys creating and editing videos to participate in Hungry Talks next year. When you look back on your work, you will be surprised with what you were able to achieve and the real impact on people.”

Says Leong: “This season of Hungry Talks has been so much fun! It has been so great watching the show evolve throughout the season and I have loved managing the social media. I’ve really enjoyed being a part of the Hungry Talks team and being able to collaborate with so many amazing people.”
