Rare with Google Creative Fellowship returns in 2022; applications close next Wednesday, Mar 16
Rare with Google Creative Fellowship will return to its Sydney, Australia campus in 2022, offering underrepresented creatives hands-on experience and mentorship from key Google creative teams.
To help push for a more inclusive and diverse industry, Rare with Google welcomes the return of the Creative Fellowship to Google’s Sydney, Australia campus, now accepting applications for its 2022 cohort, with applications closing on the 16th of March.
This Creative Fellowship ushers in a new, diverse generation of creative talent and benefits the industry at large by bringing in fresh, innovative perspectives. The Creative Fellowship is a paid, six-month apprenticeship that introduces emerging talent to the inner-workings of Google’s creative teams. Along with getting hands-on experience working on real and oftentimes large-scale projects, Fellows also receive one-on-one mentorship, networking opportunities, and Fellowship-specific events and speakers.
The Fellowship is open to creatives, writers, designers, producers, copywriters, and more from underrepresented and non-traditional backgrounds across Australia. Similar programs have also opened up to applicants in the USA and Europe, Middle East, and Africa regions.
Says Tara McKenty, Google creative head, and founder, Rare with Google: “Historically the creative industry has relied on traditional pathways to inform who gets a seat at the table. For the underrepresented creatives often excluded from that process, programs like the Fellowship offer a critical foot-in-the-door for them to jump start their career. The success of past-year’s fellowship program has proven that the best talent often comes from outside of the status quo.”
Says Yaraman Thorne, 2021 fellow: “The fellowship is a program like no other, truly life changing. I went from swinging a shovel on a construction site to working on one of the best creative teams in the world. I’ve found an industry that will be stuck with me for a while. I’ve made incredible work with the team at Google and made global connections with the future of the creative industry… pretty good for a high school dropout with poor posture.”
Rare with Google was founded in 2017 to address the distinct lack of diversity in the creative industry and the limitations it placed on new ideas and innovation.
In 2022, Rare will build upon five years of fostering underrepresented creative talent with a year-round program of new opportunities and experiences including programming at Semi Permanent, and ADCOLOR, the return of Rare Leadership Academy, and a key partnership with creative night school D&AD Shift including the launch of its Sydney night school which will see 20 different minds enter our industry later this year. All these activities are designed to find success against Rare’s overarching mission: to empower early-career creatives to better diversify and strengthen the creative landscape, further cultivating a culture of belonging for everyone.
The Fellowship applications are open for the next six days, until March 16th, and if selected the fellowship will run over six months from June—December, 2022.
