Rant&Rave: Cigarettes
RANT&RAVE – Bite sized stories about life, the universe and advertising, written by those in the thick of it.
Our TVs are smoking 2 packs a day.
Tobacco advertising is banned in Australia? Yeah right.
I’ve never seen so many cigarettes on TV and I’m not talking about the ad breaks, I’m talking about the shows.
Just watching Peaky Blinders makes my lounge room smoke detector go off.
Digging deeper I found out that Tommy Shelby lit-up 3000 lung busters in the series.
And Mad Men…If I had a dollar for every time Don Draper’s zippo ‘clinked’ open – I’d be officially $942 richer.
Don’t get me started on True Detective, Penny Dreadful and Animal Kingdom.
I’m Benson & Hedging my bets that Hollywood studios and the tobacco industry are doing ‘under the table’ deals to produce content that can deliver the ‘darts’.
How do non-smokers in ad-land feel about their fellow office smokers?
You’re there working away, while they’re off ten times a day outside having a puff in the sunshine.
Is this fair?
Or do you just feel sorry for their lives being cut short – and let it slide?
Do you want to help them?
Or do you just want them dead already Mr Anonymous?

Fair enough. But only idiots smoke these days.
A much more pernicious and ubiquitous evil on television is gambling advertising.
I’m in an agency of around 120 peeps.
Old uns, young uns, middle-aged uns.
There are 3 regular smokers, and about a dozen Friday afternoon smokers out of 120 people.
And we all watch TV.
That said, we did all start smoking meth when Breaking Bad was on, so there’s that.
Well I for one certainly don’t want a revisionist view of history presented to me, even if it is fiction.
I saw a doco on Hitler last night.
I’m off to fight Germany as we speak!
I take your point (this subject is so passe).
Did you see the doco on Killer Nurses!
Crime Channel on Foxtel.
Watch out hospitals!
I’ve never understood the vitriol people have against smokers.
Surely we could turn our ire against more pernicious habits.
Racism, misogyny, nationalism. To name a few.
Save the outrage for something a little more important.
^Exactly. People smoked in the era that both those shows are set in. It’d be weird to not have them smoking.
Please try and write something decent if you have this forum.
I used to smoke, I assume like most people. And people accused you of stealing company time etc, while still happy to bludge a few Winnie’s off you on a Friday evening.
But what really grinds my gears are coffee drinkers.
They stink.
They are unstable, either up on their coffee buzz or unable to think when the caffeine and sugar crash happens.
And they take way more time out making their brown mugs of filth than smokers ever have.
And they waste thousands per year on a senseless, stupid habit.
So do I say anything?
No. I used to smoke, so I know what it’s like when some jumped-up-jack tells me I shouldn’t do something that is perfectly legal and accepted in society.
Gambling is also big evil on our tv’s
