QLD Fire + Emergency Services urges landlords to Get interconnected in new work via Engine Group

Engine Group has launched a new campaign for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, encouraging landlords to ‘Get interconnected’.

From 1 January 2022, all residential investment properties must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed at the start of a new lease or renewal.

The important message is that this new legislation is about saving lives. Interconnected alarms ‘talk’ to each other, so when one activates, they all go off.

Says Mark Smith, creative director, Engine Group: “We didn’t just want to tell people it’s the law, so you must fit them. It’s easier to accept the need for change when you can highlight the potentially life-threatening limitations of existing systems.”

This is brought to life in a campaign spearheaded by a 30-second video of a young girl oblivious to a smoke alarm going off in another room because she’s wearing headphones.

The video content was shot by director Siobhan Mulready at Traffic – with stills photography by Alex Buckingham. The integrated campaign also features radio, digital, social and print executions.

Says Tim Weger, managing director, Engine: “A small flame can turn into a major fire in under 30 seconds. So while this campaign is primarily talking to landlords, we also wanted to give owner occupier households a compelling reason to think about fitting interconnected systems themselves.”
