About The Metropolitan Orchestra

Campaign Brief 279.pngThe Metropolitan Orchestra (TMO) is led by the vibrant and dynamic Australian conductor, Sarah-Grace Williams. Created in 2009 with the goal of making premium standard orchestral/classical music accessible to Sydney audiences, TMO is setting a new paradigm for this musical genre in Australia.

Says artistic director and chief conductor Sarah-Grace Williams: “Before TMO, often the only way to see a top standard orchestral concert was to attend big, impersonal and expensive city based venues with concerts that were both intimidating and often lacking passion.”

TMO has since staged more than 50 acclaimed concerts to packed houses and standing ovations at local venues. This highly accessible delivery model has introduced many Sydney-siders to quality live orchestral performances in Sydney while elevating this culturally significant genre to the standards of other major European and American cities. “By making the music accessible, delivered by vibrant and passionate musicians who absolutely love what they do, we are changing the way the music is perceived. It is also giving some of our best musicians another crucial premium live performance option, and in doing so, we are hopefully slowing the leak of great Australian players to international markets.” The orchestra is flexible enough to play in small chamber ensembles through to full symphony size, always delivered passionately and vibrantly.

In addition to presenting concerts in local venues, TMO also performs at premium concert venues such as the Sydney Opera House, City Recital Hall and Angel place, with renowned artists including Sumi Jo (soprano), David Helfgott (Piano) and James Morrison (trumpet).

They have also been seen in the middle of a football field providing the pre-game entertainment for the National Rugby League Grand Final to a live and televised audience of millions. as was the case at the NRL Grand Final in 2011.

In 2013 TMO and Sarah-Grace Williams will showcase several new Australian works delivered from suburban and major venues continuing the high accessibility of each TMO performance.

Highlights for 2013 include a free outdoor concert event, World premieres of two commissioned Australian works with internationally renowned artists such as percussionist Claire Edwardes, a Britten gala with Katie Noonan, additional Australian works by Williams, Noonan and Benz, a large gala celebration for the orchestra’s 5th birthday plus additional special chamber concerts including the eight cellists of TMO.
