Nobby, DiLallo, Drape, Rutherford, Ranallo, Royce picked for 2010 Cannes Lions juries
Australia’s jurors for the 2010 Cannes Lions has been released, with David ‘Nobby’ Nobay (top left), chairman of Droga5 Australia representing Australia on the Direct Lions jury, Andy DiLallo (top right), ECD of Leo Burnett, Sydney on the Film Lions Jury, Justin Drape (middle left), creative partner of Three Drunk Monkeys, Sydney, on the Press Lions Jury, Grant Rutherford (middle right), ECD of DDB Melbourne on the Radio Lions Jury, Rocky Ranallo (bottom left), CD of BWM Melbourne on the Outdoor Lions Jury, and Damian Royce (bottom right), CD at Clemenger BBDO Melbourne, on the Cyber Lions Jury. Peter Horgan, CEO of OMD, will be on the Media Lions Jury, Martin Walters, head of promotional marketing at Leo Burnett, will be on the Promo and Activation Lions Jury and Simone Drewry, managing director of Mango Communications, will be on the PR Lions Jury.
Cannes International Advertising Festival chairman Terry Savage toldCB: “Australia was rated 4th last year at Cannes in terms of Lions won- the measure of its ability in creativity is not measured by the jurymembers selected but by the many who could not be selected, who wouldalso do the job in Cannes very well.”
Says News Limited group director of marketing: advertising and integration, Garth Agius: “Following such a big year for Australia in Cannes last year, it’s fantastic that we have representation on nine out of the eleven jury panels. Judging at Cannes means mixing with some of the best talent in the world and we’re sending a great cross section of experienced and talented individuals.”
Look out for Young Lions competition, which launches February 25. New format from print and cyber, including a 24 hour brief.

I just can’t see why this is newsworthy for a national newspaper…. Even on an industry blog it seems a stretch to me.
I mean, what’s the big deal. Year in, year out, Aussies get their seats on the panels of the big awards shows.
Well deserved Rubber!
Unless of course if it’s you on the jury, bothered.
Nice Dolphin
Not being snarky here:
Anyone know how many / what direct awards Nobby has won?
Again – not being snarky.
Nice one Grant.
Why the long face?
Nobby drew the short straw when it came to Aussie jurors. But they had to give him something, so they gave him Direct. No-one at Cannes gives a fuck about Direct, and no-one in the Direct industry here gives a fuck about Cannes. So it worked out well for all concerned.
Come on Just Curious, everyone knows Direct is just mainstream with a phone number.
For those to young too remember and those too old to bother…..In hias former life Nobby was a founding partner in one of Australia’s most successful Direct agencies. So not a bad choice I reckon.
These people are recruited because they are experienced creative leaders with the runs on the board. And it doesn’t matter which panel they are on either, these guys know how to spot and judge a great idea in any medium. Anyone who questions the appointments is just bitter and jealous they were not picked.
Congrats to Nobby, Rubber and everyone else that gets selected.
There’s no denying Nobby is one of the powerhouse legend creatives in this country, but he’s been miscast as a Direct juror. Despite his origins in Direct, he is hardly a current practitioner, more suited to the film, press, or campaign juries. Australia has a plethora of internationally-awarded Direct CDs, all more suitable candidates for the Direct jury.
Much respect to Nobby – his credentials speak for themselves.
However, it’s been many moons since he’s been engaged with the Direct community. He doesn’t either enter or doesn’t win the local direct awards or direct categories (AWARD, ADMA, Effies et al), nor does has he judged in these awards of late.
There are a great many specialists in this field locally who are world renowned and also actively involved locally. This shit matters to them and they’re bloody good at it – they’re the ones who should be getting a tilt at the Direct jury. Nobby is better placed on plenty of the others – Film, Radio and especially Titanium.
And as for the assertion that no-one in the direct industry here cares about Cannes, that’s pretty breathtakingly naive. Year on year Australia’s entries to the Direct Lions are growing at a faster rate than just about any of the other sections. Oh, and we’re also winning a lot more of ’em. I’d say that adds up to “giving a fuck”.
I’d have thought the obvious Oz contenders for the Direct jury would be Gavin or Dylan. Did they turn it down? Or weren’t they invited?
Please Rubba, all the Clems work!!
Chris, They like to spread the nominations around. Gavin did last year’s, and I think Dylan the year before. And most of the other Direct CDs seemed to get made redundant over the past year.
Gav has done it. Dylan has done it.
But you still have a lot of class to choose from. David Bell. Pete Bidenko. Matt Batten. Brad Waggonner. Tan Gout Nee. Lee Callister. Charlie Lawrence. Robin Sinclair. They’re all taking DM briefs on a daily basis and understand what ‘world-class’ means in this medium. (And none of them were retrenched this year Simon)
For those of you who don’t think understanding the medium matters… would you be happy with a DM creative on the Film jury? Thought not.
Um, 5.08pm, you might find some of them did. Though all have now resettled fortunately. Plus the guys who run their own shops, like Charlie and Robin, don’t necessarily get on the Cannes radar as they aren’t throwing loads of entries in, .
(And Pete Bidenko represented the UAE last year.)
That said, it is a moot discussion now. Though I agree it’s certainly time for Dave Bell to have a crack – they did just win direct agency of the year after all.
Look at your CD.
Now look at me.
Look at your CD.
Now back to me.
Sadly, you’re CD isn’t me.
But he could smell like me.
Look down.
Look up.
I’m on a boat.
With Andy Spice, I can be anywhere.
Thankyou, and judging by your informative and well crafted responses, it goes to show the DM guys are a lot more polite and literate than some of the other specialties.
I believe this raises another curious point – if you haven’t won an award in whichever category in say, the past 5 years, should you be allowed to judge that category?
There was one judge from Australia on outdoor, yet he’s only won one film award in 1999.
Not being snarky, but what are the rules for judges?
How do they get selected? Who selects them?
Again – just curious, not being snarky.
