New take on ‘I still call Australia home’

Ogilvy Sydney has put to air a new spot for Qantas, combining new footage of an aboriginal boy singing in his native tongue with existing footage from previous spots. The boy is soon joined by the rest of the Qantas choir, switching to the English version the Peter Allen song.

Seems a bit insensitive to me. I’m sure it researched well, though.
yikes.
They should say sorry.
Fix your shit airline first.
good job, but i’m sure the aborigines called Australia something other than ‘Australia’
Lovely big images.
Lovely song.
Kid looks Indian.
Airline needs to clean up it’s once flawless image by bringing the servicing of the fleet back to Australia. We understand farming out nuisance calls to the third world but fleet maintenance? really?
That’s a lot of money to spend on a remake of the last ad.
Stop running around kids!
Why do those kids all have stupid expessions on their faces.
That looks twenty years old!
Regardless of Qantas’ problems, this is the unofficial national anthem. The punters will lap it up.
Hate to burst the last bastion of pride in what you made Dave, but while the official anthem is shit (though still better than this) the unofficial anthem would be Waltzing Matilda.
Hell, I’d rather sing “Whatsa madda wit Cho?” instead of this trollop.
Qantas need some good PR before they go out with this ad again.
I’ld say most Australians are disappointed with what’s been served up from Qantas recently. It was a brand that was absolutely loved no questions asked.
This ad will seem like a poor band aid stunt “quick roll out that ad again that’ll fix it”
Another bodgy patch up job.
Sad because it’s a nice ad. It reminds us of what Qantas used to be.
Same old. Same old. Dull, boring rehashed shite we’ve been getting served up by Singo’s for years.
I’ve always thought the unofficial national anthem should be “I am, you are, we are Australian.”
I’ll reluctantly give SOM credit where credit’s due. Never the easiest of briefs to update an old concept – how to hang on to what’s worked and still make it new? All in all, I reckon they’ve done a pretty good job.
Gave me a little chill when I first saw it the other night. (Or that may have been a premonition walking over the grave of the Wallabies. Now that was a performance that was disappointing, same old, same old dull dull dull).
For me the unofficial anthem has always been The Angles ‘Am I Ever Gonna’ See Your face Again?’. But maybe that’s just the Brisvegas westie that still lurks inside me.
Re: Ben said ..
Same old. Same old. Dull, boring rehashed comments we’ve been getting served up on the blog for years. Not sure why you take the time write such inane and pointless remarks.
How about the unofficial national anthem “I am, you are, we are a bunch of idiots.” Oh wait …
i thought it was great. put your hand up if you’re an unemployed hack. (every response till now)
I think the national anthem should be acdc’s TNT
Actually it’s awesome. If you get really really stoned, then turn the sound down and watch it with this playing in the background (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKvwU1TUwtk&feature=related) it syncs up perfectly.
BTW ‘You’re the voice’ is our national anthem, can’t have a Scottish singer taking that privilege 11:06. Close second is this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRk8vWJGE6o&feature=related
I think the national anthem should be the sound of my fist going through the face of whoever recommended ‘I still call Australia home’ as the national anthem. Probably make about 7 verses.
Easy enough to remember, even our Rugby & Cricket teams might have a chance of remembering it.

Jesus, that’s fucked up.
You’re the voice is gay.
At least Qantas did something very few other ‘Australian’ companies are prepared to do and that is use Indigenous faces as part of the mainstream rather than in a tokenistic tribal bush setting that doesn’t challenge the stereotype. I think this is a step forward for this country and for once shows the face of Indigenous Australia in a positive and contemporary light within an advertising campaign.
To Anonymous at 7.26….
Well Said.
I too am glad an Australian company finally put their money where their mouth is towards true reconciliation.

So is sarcasm.
OHHHH SNAAAAAAPPP you guys!!!! You burned them hard!!! They are gonna need a waaaambulance to take them to the BURNS ward.
Morons.
just a nice ad. cant we just leave it at that?
i agree mate. its a beatiful ad. just leave it at that.
it overlays the english version on top of the aboriginal version, you can hear it if you listen.
