New Daniel Johns film ‘What If The Future Never Happened?’ to premiere nationally this November

After years in development, What If The Future Never Happened? – a new film reimagining the early life of Daniel Johns – is set to premiere nationally this November.

Written and directed by James Medlam, and co-written by Heath George and Heath Johns, the film has been a long-term passion project for Clockwork Films in partnership with BMG, Frontier, WMG and Winarch Group.

Says Medlam: “Working with Dan to bring this story to the big screen has been one of the most magical projects I’ve ever worked on.  So many talented people came together and made something special and we are all so proud of. For me as a director, it’s one of those once in a lifetime projects, I’m really keen for the world to see what we have been cooking up.”

The story revisits Johns as a teenager in 1994, on the brink of global fame, when a mysterious figure from the future arrives to alter the course of events. The result is a semi-autobiographical exploration of memory, music and imagination that blurs the lines between what was, what is, and what could have been.

The soundtrack is driven by Johns’ ARIA-topping solo album FutureNever, already the longest-running Australian top 10 album of 2022, alongside orchestral reinterpretations of his Silverchair classics. FutureNever has been celebrated internationally and now provides the emotional backbone of the film.

Clockwork Films says the project has been “a true labour of love,” with the production team working closely with Johns to bring his vision to screen.
