Myer launches new ‘Bigger than Christmas’ campaign via Clemenger BBDO, Melbourne
Myer is helping put the joy back into 2020, with a Christmas campaign via Clemenger BBDO Melbourne, encouraging Australians to come together to celebrate all of the moments they’ve missed out on this year and make this Christmas even ‘Bigger than Christmas’.
From birthday parties, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, anniversaries, Easter, and weddings that have had to be put on hold or celebrated in isolation – Australians will be packing it all into one day where they can celebrate it all.
To launch the campaign, Myer have today released an original Christmas carol that reflects on the events and occasions that were a little different this year, using iconic Aussie satire and sunny-side up sense of humour.
The campaign will come to life across all facets of the major Australian retailer’s communications including: advertising, visual merchandising, stores and digital platforms. It also showcases Myer’s ultimate, curated, one-stop Giftorium experience, which includes an exclusive partnership with Disney. In addition, Myer Gifticians will solve all gift giving needs to suit all ages and budgets, there will be complimentary gift wrapping along with the option for customers to round up their purchases at the point of sale, with proceeds going to charity.

“For a year that’s been like no other, this campaign has never been more culturally relevant, and is something we will all be able to relate to. We hope it provides joy and inspiration for Australians to really celebrate this Christmas and, for that matter, all the other occasions that have been missed this year.
“With our curated, one-stop Giftorium there is no better place to shop. Myer is there for all Australians and all occasions. Also, through our charity bear, Gilbert, our POS round up and more initiatives to come, we also look forward to supporting those most in need at this special time of year.”
Says Jim Curtis and Ryan Fitzgerald. executive creative directors, Clemenger BBDO Melbourne: “It has been one hell of a year. However, out of the mayhem comes the opportunity for Australians to have a Christmas like never before—to cram all that we have missed into one chaotically wonderful day. And there’s only one store where you can find the perfect gifts for such a rare occasion: Myer. So this year we hope everyone has a very merry birthday and a happy new mother’s day.”
The campaign’s media approach, led by Ikon, is steeped in making Myer’s Bigger Than Christmas campaign bigger than the rest. Unmissable media with in-depth partnerships will ensure Myer creates and owns this relatable conversation, and showcasing that no matter who you’re purchasing for or what they missed out on this year, the perfect gift is waiting for them at Myer.

Well done.
I can’t tell if you couldn’t afford Tim Minchin or Eddie Perfect, or if you just couldn’t afford to put them on camera… Nice idea though. Props to client for going topical too.
I hear Gatesy (Steven Gates) from Tripod but that’s definitely not him on screen.
Tim and Ed would bag Santa.
I agree. What a rip off of Tim Minchin’s iconic style.
You could of attempted something original .
It doesn’t matter if he bags Christmas. You have stolen his style without permission.
I dont know if Tim owns this style or if he is involved with Electric Dreams who did music
not only Tim Minchin’s style, but I remember he wrote and sang a song for ABC spicks and specks 11 April 2007, episode 3.9 and it is remarkably similar!
I agree totally. Sure sounds like Tim Minchins style for sure .
If he didn’t write that . You should be ashamed Myer
I completely disagree that it’s a Tim Minchin rip off. I think it is much more in Steven Gate’s style, and we should be commending him for a great song than complaining that he’s not someone else.
I have to agree.. Arrangement, Style and Production has Rock n Roll nerd vibes. Nothing like making a Quick buck on 3 chords you epically wrote 10years ago….. Do u eat pigs?
That feels huge. Love it.
big props to the team that got this idea bought into and then EVEN made!
Incredibly bad and painful to watch, couldn’t even get through the whole thing.
Go back to watching memes, emo.
Ugh – I couldn’t agree with you more! Excessive, indulgent, expensive, over the top, aimless and distasteful. I thought of all the people who have nothing, wondering how it would feel to watch that large heap of rubbish.
Dig it !!
Great stuff. Where was this filmed? In Melbourne during lockdown or Sydney? Or NZ?
Sydney Town Hall
Epic, gives me feels. Well done Clems & nick
Love the attempt to role all footy codes into one.
We all know rugby league is the only football in Australia though.
Beautifully crafted
Feels right and looks the part. Bloody ripper Aussie Xmas ad.
Save us and deliver the goods with your Christmas ad this year. You’re our only hope.

Nice ad. Good job agency. Shame about your dirty, disgusting environmental record Myer.
Creative credits? Or was it the Clems inhouse Covid-songwriting department (that’s not a burn btw – I love all their output – might ask for the album for Christmas)
No one will watch 1:36 seconds of an ad, no one knows who this is for.
No distinctive assets
No Myer consistency
This is an ad, for an ads sake.
Did I mention twee?
Ever heard of cut downs?
I love how BMF are trying to pump the Aldi tyres.
News flash, the Myer work is much better.
Wasn’t pumping Aldi’s tyres at all. More a sorry response to @Please Aldi expecting Aldi to ‘save us’ with their latest Christmas attempt.
This is amazing work and it is shameful to see that yet again the team members at Clemenger have not been named and recognized in the article. Clemenger is the only reason Myer stay relevant, yet Myer marketing takes all the credit. Congrats CLEMENGER
I thought the exact same thing. Maybe they’re not super proud of the messaging here though 😉
So what is the ad trying to sell? Who is ad for? Get to the point! Doesn’t entice me at all to shop at Myer for Christmas. Total waste of whose money?
Did not like that at all! Yes I agree very painful and meaningless to watch. Also mot for children teally depressing.
A traditional film using the entire budget isn’t going to help drive online or instore sales. This brand needs real solutions, not tinsel decorations.
Couldn’t watch the whole thing. If served this as a TVC or unskippable video (even a 30s), I’d be frustrated until it was over. Given the frequency it’ll probably be pumped out at, I’d be absolutely fuming with it in a week.
I wonder if this is only airing in metropolitan Melbourne. I know I certainly didn’t miss out of Easter, Halloween, birthdays or weddings. Maybe Myer need a little reminder that they have stores outside of Bourke Rd in Melbourne
Kicking goals NK! Nice work
Bloody beautiful ad. Well done to all involved… you don’t need your names listed on this site to know that you’ve just made a cracking ad.
And the ol’ saying “punters will love it” is certainly true.
Couldn’t help but wonder whether the budget didn’t stretch far enough for Tim Minchin too, but the track still works without him… let’s call it an ‘homage’.
This is brilliant. Well done all.
Happy Congratulations?
Serious question btw
Freaking awesome
Should have stopped at 30 seconds though
Looks like a Black & Gold brand Ben Lee
Really going on all in on the silly song ideas at the moment aren’t we…
Just watched my son (11) watch it all the way through on youtube. It’s good, it’s watchable, it’s an homage to Tim & 2020 and an uncancelled Christmas. A brave & beautiful swan song from Myer !
Tim Minchin much?
Thanks to Myer Stores and the commissioning ad agency Clemenger BBDO.
I think it an excellent piece of business communication with a good social message for this particular Christmas during a year of a global pandemic.
I think all of the performers and the creatives who designed and produced this did a great job!
Thanks for the uplifting social message
Hmm saw a billboard ad before I saw the spot and I was confused at the messaging. I don’t think the average consumer would have gotten what Myer was trying to say without say reading this campaign brief article or watching the full TVC.
Awful ad campaign, doesn’t do Myer any favours
I don’t think Tim Minchin has exclusivity over musical comedy. It MIGHT be a genre that’s hundreds of years old …?
Is the song written by Tim Minchin?
If not, I feel you’ve somehow stolen his very unique style of writing and singing.
Great advert, we love it.
But sad if this is the back story.
I would really love to know why you’ve bagged this film? It’s magic, what’s your beef?
Tell us.
Nice work guys
A very good Tim Minchin rip-off
How is it that even my Myers social manager gets a mention and the creatives arent even listed. I dont know who is to blame for not sharing the credit with clemenger but here is the real prob, this ad has little meaning for those not in lockdown e.g. all of Australia except vic. This is a huge oversight. Plus, the message just does not make sense without the TV ad as context.
If this is meant to be humorous , it completely misses the mark again.
Singer repulsive, advertisement repulsive.
Just saw this ad. It’s a Brilliant feel-good experience. It’s fun, funny and reminds us all that we’re emerging successfully from a terrible year. It encourages growth in the entire retail industry.
Congratulations!
Who is the pianist in the ad?
Exploiting a global disaster to try and evoke all the feelings of having missed an entire year and then directing those emotions to encourage us to spend all of our money at Myer? Utter garbage. Myer doesn’t care about you.
You might want to do some reading on how advertising works.
Congratulations Clems. Hard to be funny this year – I love the idea of celebrating everything at once.
Unsure the singer has the charisma but he’s quite good – who is he? There’s plenty of performers beyond the ones mentioned in this thread who do musical comedy – I’m curious why this one was picked.
Worst advert ever!
Saw this ad today for the first time and *loved* it. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… finally!
Whoa…Tim may be both annoyed and strangely honoured his unique style has been copied…in the most schmaltzy manner. The laugh is on the agency and Myer. Hard to watch.
Wow..sounds like Tim Minchin or Sammy J minus Randy
Finally I got to smile this year. The ad is brilliant and bought a tear to my eye. I am an elderly wife/carer for my husband and we have missed so much this year which has seemed to be such a chaotic year with everything being turned upside down and the add depicts this very well. Showed it to my daughter and she loved it too. We are a very christmassy family
Great job. The whoe family loved it.
Arrr! Wee Timmy Minchin is back in town!
Truly awful. The music has Definitely got a Tim Minchin vibe, but the lyrics and visuals are corny, twee and not relevant to anyone outside of Victoria. Even after seeing the ad, randomly, several times, I never remembered the ad is actually for. Certainly won’t get me into Myer any time soon.
I like the catchy tune, and the sentiment behind the ad. 2020 has been a shit year, for just about every single person on the face of the Earth. I read through the comments and to say the Myer has exploited a pandemic strikes me as amusing, since you don’t even know it is a Myer ad until the very end. Can it not just be an ad telling people that even though the year has been a bad one use Christmas to celebrate every other special occasion missed throughout this year. Let’s just hope 2021 is better.
I like the add yes thought straight away Tim Minchin but I like the inclusiveness and the upbeat we need that now .
Sounds like English band McFly. Like the ad, makes me look up McFly on youtube.
I also thought of Time Minchin and the Spicks and Specks song he did straight off the bat. Has to be Tim. Who ever wrote/sang this dirty should be credited, but alas in none of my searches have I been able to find who the writer is. Full credit if it’s Tim. If not, then his copycat still deserves a nod for a catchy, Aussie, playful tune.
Very entertaining, love the song. No bitching here. I am not a muso, just know what I like. I saw plenty of entertainers being employed.
I immediately thought it was the fabulous
Tim Minchin’s unique and ingenious style. I would imagine Myer and Tim would benefit from the collaboration. Come out and say you were influenced by this amazing entertainer.
All I see is dollar signs baby, cha ching
