Monash University launches Sip Safe activation – a simple wristband that helps protect young people against drink spiking via Y&R Melbourne
Y&R Melbourne has launched Sip Safe on campus at Monash University. The Sip Safe wristbands detect drugs by simply placing a drop of your drink onto the band itself.
Designed for widespread use across festivals, events, bars, nightclubs and other venues where patrons are already accustomed to using wristbands, Sip Safe is equal parts utility, education and deterrent for would-be drink spikers.
The product was first trialled during Schoolies in late 2017 and will now be rolled out at a variety of student and youth events throughout the year.
Says Trisha Prpich, director, Monash Residential Services: “Monash is invested in the safety and wellbeing of our students. We want to make sure our community is safe and well informed, and that includes encouraging everyone to drink
responsibly. Sip Safe has the potential to provide users with an easy way to determine if their drink has been spiked with two of the most common drugs used in drink spiking.”
Says Jake Barrow, executive creative director, Y&R Melbourne: “Launching Sip Safe with Monash University is an incredibly proud moment for us. It represents a milestone in the effective harm reduction and education of drink spiking. We hope the initiative goes on to make a difference throughout the broader community.”

The kind of high level ideas you want to see from a university.
“Despite recent media reports, drink spiking with drugs like GHB and Rohypnol® is very rare. Alcohol is a far more common way to spike drinks. Drugs that are used to spike drinks are usually depressants that make you act like you are drunk, or just about to pass out.”
Can’t fault the idea. Only question is why not PR it 6 months ago when you first ‘trialled’ it? Is it award time?
Wish I’d done this
Might have wanted to avoid the stigma of prototypes that don’t get made.
Good on them for getting it up
Circa Veronica Mars season 3, episode 9.
Is there a website or content or something to go with this? I’m seeing all the digital and production credits and wondering if there’s something else?
Took some digging to remember where but i knew I’d seen it somewhere before http://www.youngglory.com/november-1617/
It’s amazing.
The whole fucking industry goes ‘save the world’ crazy just before Cannes.
After June they honestly won’t give a toss if half the students in Australia got spiked.
As long as they have their precious, precious award.
Some student did this ages ago…
You stole my idea!
How are people even meant to see the results in a dark nightclub? I suppose we’ll be carrying around eyedroppers on a night out too?

Why does the website have no branding?
Why is the website not included in this press release, or promoted by Monash University anywhere?
Why is the website set up by Y&R, and not Monash University?
Why do the T&Cs list Monash University as a mere ‘launch partner’?
Why do the T&Cs state, “Monash University supports the Sip Safe initiative but makes no representation that the wristband will ensure a drink is safe, and to the extent allowable accepts no liability for any loss or harm suffered by a user of this wristband.”?
Should the initiative be called sip-safe-ish?
Come on guys, this is what is wrong with award season.
oops…
Why do the T&C’s say:
For more information please visit the supplier’s website at drinksafe.com which is shop in Florida where you appear to be able to buy these off the shelf for less than a dollar…?
